Vancouver Weekender: May 30 through June 1, 2014

Friday

Critical Mass is set to clog up Vancouver’s main streets just in time for the weekend. If you really want to be that guy or girl, gear up and meet up with throngs of others just outside the Vancouver Art Gallery after work. If you’re trying to escape the city before the mass ride takes over the streets, beg your boss to let you out early.

If you haven’t checked out the latest handful of openings around town, make Friday night the night to head out to Jackalopes Neighbourhood Dive, which has fast become a go-to spot within the hipster-esque Hastings Sunrise community. You’ll find a space filled with funky, tastefully chosen décor that lends itself to a super comfy and cozy atmosphere. To complement the room, tuck into tasty Southern-inspired dishes and killer cocktails. Tip: order up the cheddar jalapeno fritters with housemade spicy mayo and thank us later.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Vancouver Craft Beer Week is now underway (for the next nine days). Things kick off Friday to celebrate their 5th anniversary in a big way, hosted by Swollen Members’ own Prevail. If you can’t make that party, the VCBW features 12 other feature events, nine signature events and plenty of other freshly brewed picks to satisfy your agenda.

EAT! Vancouver Food + Cooking Festival is back and bigger than ever. With celebrity guest chefs like Chuck Hughes and Lynn Crawford taking the stage as well as local stars in the kitchen like Rob Feenie, Vikram Vij and Ned Bell, you can bet there’ll be plenty of culinary action.

Saturday

Eat Local and head out to explore several of the city’s most well-stocked farmers markets on Saturday. Make a day of it and start off at the Trout Lake Farmers Market (runs from 9am until 2pm). Next, make your way to the newly opened West End Farmers Market (same hours) where you’ll be able to stock up on all the latest farm fresh offerings, baked goods, coffees, snacks, poultry, seafood and more.

Made In Strathcona is also taking place on Saturday and gives locals the opportunity to get to know one of Vancouver’s most historically important neighbourhoods. Strathcona is home to hundreds of businesses (think HQs for the likes of Aritzia, Hootsuite, and Hershel Supply Co., to name a few). With only two tours taking place, this is not to be missed as it allows the public the opportunity to discover the diverse, creative businesses who have made YVR home and have truly help put this hood on the map. Saturday’s tour ends with snacks and drinks at The Settlement Building (Vancouver Urban Winery).

Wise Hall is hosting an Old-Time Square Dance party on Saturday night for those of you who simply can’t wait for the Calgary Stampede coming up in July. Grab your dancing shoes and leave your ego at the door for a night of energetically charged fun. The evening features live music by Shout!WhiteDragon! and the expert teaching of Paul Silveria. Drinks will be available to help loosen you up.

Sunday

Fair in the Square is back once again this Sunday (11 a.m. until 2 p.m.) at Victory Square Park. Don’t miss this opportunity to get out and enjoy the sunshine, mix and mingle with neighbours, and support the Central City Foundation. There will be a community fair, artisan market, live music, crafts, a BBQ and more.
