Vancouver Weekender: May 23 through 25th, 2014

This weekend we’ve uncovered plenty of notable events and happenings guaranteed to help you fill up your social calendar. It all starts with attending a mighty artistic battle followed by a bit of insightful conversation. Next, check out one of several community-minded markets or the latest acrobatic installment courtesy of Cirque du Soleil. Or you could just sit back and relax on a local beach – we’re definitely not picky

Friday

Sit back, sip a cold one, and watch the artistic battle begin at this Friday’s Art Battle Vancouver taking over Electric Owl. It’s a new venue, but the battlegrounds remain the same and live competitive painting shall ensue. A dozen of Vancouver’s top and emerging artists are set to compete for $500 in cash, plus the chance to partake in the ultimate creative showdown on a national level (and hopefully take home the win again). Tickets can be purchased online starting at $10 in advance, or $15 at the door.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Get ready to engage this weekend and check out Spur. Join fellow Vancouverites, academics, artists and politicians (yeah, they’ll be there too) for an insightful and entertaining series of open conversations during which speakers will each have the chance to make their case on a variety of subjects (ranging from green living, to galleries, to the quantification of nature). The conversational landscape knows no bounds; talks will examine big ideas in creative ways. For more info and to grab a seat, click here.

Don’t get too serious, though. Lighten up and laugh it off by attending the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival (all weekend at the Roundhouse Mews in Yaletown). The Vancouver Comic Arts Festival is a weekend-long celebration of comics that enjoyed its launch in May 2012. The festival features readings, panels, and workshops, culminating in a two-day exhibition for cartoonists from across the country and down the coast.

TOTEM is in town and comes to our city courtesy of Cirque du Soleil. It is a stunning showcase of human creativity and Gumby-like flexibility you definitely ought to consider checking out this weekend. Having just launched late last week to stellar reviews, score yourself a set of tickets and get ready to be awe-struck by the talented performers. TOTEM examines mankind’s relationship with nature and how we’ve impacted both it and each other over time. A definite show worth noting.

Playland is back and bigger and better than ever. Unleash your inner kid and head to the PNE for an afternoon (or evening) of fun. Featuring over 30 different attractions this year, Playland features new ride Rock-N-Cars alongside longtime favourites like ATMOSFEAR, Corkscrew, the Wooden Roller Coaster, Flume, and Pirate. As part of your $29.50 admission you gain access to the Climbing Wall, Pacific Adventure Golf, their Haunted Mansion and plenty more.

Saturday

Eat Local. This weekend it’s all about getting outside and enjoying the fruits of local farmers, crafters and the like at one of the handful of farmers markets setting up shop on the regular around town. Start off by making your way over to the West End Farmers Market before heading over to check out the Kitsilano Farmers Market. Load up on fresh seasonal offerings, but be sure to save room for the mother load at the Trout Lake Farmers Market.

Food For Thought Gala is set to take over the Telus World of Science on Saturday night and is an event not to miss. Grab your best cocktail attire and head to this interactive and fun-filled night that benefits the Backpack Buddies Program to help provide children in Vancouver’s inner-city schools with backpacks filled with nutritious food to help sustain them through the week. Stay for drinks ($75) or enjoy the entire evening ($250). Find all the details here

Sunday

It’s all about shopping local on Sunday and scoring some seriously great (unique) deals at The Eastside Flea. The East Side Flea will be taking over 585 E. Broadway with more than 25 different revolving vendors throughout the day. Don’t miss your chance to check out informative workshops, demonstrations, chill out in their lounge area and record listening station, as well as load up on plenty of other goodies. For all the details and complete vendor list, be sure to visit them online. The market runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at 1882 Adanac Street.
