Vancouver Weekender: May 18 through 21, 2012

It's only fitting that this highly-anticipated long weekend has a great weather forecast to match. Get out and enjoy Vancouver's endless beaches and Farmer's Markets, or trek out to Whistler to welcome the opening of the mountain's bike park. We've covered everything young professionals need to know for the long weekend in this edition of the Weekender

If you’re like us, you’re just itching to enjoy this upcoming long weekend – be it in town, or away. This Weekender edition is packed with all sorts of options to suit your fancy, and then some, guaranteed to help you get the most out of an extra day off work.

With the weather looking like it’ll be full of sunshine as we head into this long weekend that unofficially marks the start of summer for many, we think you ought to beeline it to the beach (or sun-drenched park space) after work. It’s the perfect opportunity to break out the portable BBQ, grab some drinks, snacks and friends and unwind in true west coast style. Our favourite place to find a little R&R: Third Beach in Stanley Park,Ambleside Beach, Spanish Banks, and, for those seeking interesting viewing pleasureWreck Beach is always an eye full of fun.

Looking to head out of town? If you’re lucky, duck out of the office early and make your way over to one of many coastal islands that are easily accessed by ferry and offer-up a bit of weekend-long outdoors escapism. One of our favourites is Galiano Island and its direct ride over from the Tsawwassen terminal in Vancouver. Book yourself a spot at one of the many B&Bs, cabins and cottages on this picturesque island, or opt for an early start to camping and check out Montague Harbour Provincial Marine Park’s floating nature house, trails and white shell sand beaches. Head into town for a bit of shopping and check out the goods at local favourite Sturdies Bay Bakery and Cafe (find it at 2540 Sturdies Bay Road), or grab pub grub at The Harbour Grill and overlook all the marina action.

If you’re sticking close to home, use Saturday to get out an explore and head over to the North Shore for a bit of a hike along Quarry Rock in Deep Cove or head to West Van and tackle the Brother’s Creek Loop (a bit longer and steeper). Find details, directions and more hikes here.

Having worked up an appetite, we suggest you get yourself a spot on a sunny patio somewhere nearby and head to either the Village Taphouse or Deep Cove’s Arms Reach Bistro. We love the selection of sandwiches and burgers at both, and the endless menu of brewed offerings at the Taphouse is definitely worth noting.

With the long weekend comes the official launch of Lower Mainland’s Night Market scene. This is always a great option when looking for a bit of culture combined with unique finds and experiences (be it culinary or other). For 2012, the ever-popular Richmond Night Market has shifted over to a waterfront location next to the River Rock Casino (conveniently located just off the Canada Line). With hundreds of vendors, live performances, great food and an expansive 18-acre property, this is definitely going to be a hot spot throughout the season. To help fill up this new space, the Richmond Night Market has added carnival rides, a zipline and room for more than 250 booths. So go ahead and get your shop on this Saturday night – it’s open until around midnight.

On Sunday, we suggest you head up to Whistler for a bit of a fresh air-fuelled getaway. Though skiing is still going strong on Blackcomb this year, the weekend also marks the official opening of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. It’s the moment that a lot of bike enthusiasts wait for and early bird passes are available to ensure you get the most rides for your buck.

Wind down your day of riding and wind up at the GLC (Garibaldi Lift Company) for a few drinks while you catch a few rays and trade trail stories. Alternatively, you can freshen up by heading over to one of our favourites, the Scandinave Spa, with packages starting at under $60 – it’s the perfect fix.

If you’re looking for last-minute deals on rooms and resorts mountainside, fear not, there are still plenty to be had. Check them out online and extend your stay to play longer.

Use holiday Monday to catch up on sleep, head to the beach with a book, or check out the local Farmer’s Markets that are back in business and gear up for a short work week ahead.
