Vancouver Weekender, May 17 through 19, 2013

Ditch the desk as soon as the clock strikes 5 o’clock and beeline your way to a patio, stat. On our list of worthwhile decks to seek out: The Dockside (for a picturesque, less touristy waterfront view on Granville Island), Reflections at the Rosewood (if you’re keen on upping the swank factor), or head down to Chill Winston for some people watching festivities (coupled with killer cocktails).

If you haven’t already checked out the recently opened one-stop java-fuelled do-good shop East Van Roasters (319 Carrall Street), be sure to do so this weekend as they’ll be offering tastings of their signature roasted coffee alongside delectable sweet treats. It’s a great spot for fitting in a bit of people watching before gearing up for the day ahead – and we always love supporting local initiatives that give back to the community. Added bonus for popping by: you can grab custom roasted beans to go and get your chocolate fix underway for the day.

Next, throw a bit of action into the mix by heading out to Deep Cove and renting a kayak or stand-up paddle board for a few hours of ocean exploration and exercise. Not only do you feel like you’re truly en route to an escape getting there, you’ll find yourself surrounded by majestic mountains, aquatic life and mile and miles of pristine west coast wilderness once in the water.  After you’ve maxed out your energy, refuel by making a pit stop at the local Raven Pub, or stop in at long time favourite The Rusty Gull for a pint and pub bite.

Be sure to check out a few of the latest spots to open their doors to discerning diners in YVR. We’re talking about Graze and Burdock & Co. The former boasts a growing buzz surrounding their veggie-based menu featuring a heavy offering of locally-sourced and organic produce (including all spirits, beer and wine). If you pitch up at Burdock & Co. for a bite, we suggest you nab a seat at their communal table if you’re looking to up the ante on entertainment. Look for plenty of fresh, in-season dishes (hello, halibut!) plus unique pickings such as their pickled humpback shrimp and green farro to fill your appetite.

Looking for something to do Saturday night? Why not make your way down to Chinatown to check out the Chinatown Night Market (starts this Friday through until September 8th every weekend). There are a record number of vendors, lots of live entertainment and great ways to immerse yourself in the chaos. Try your hand at ping-pong and catch a classic flick as you make your way through the sprawling rows of curious and culinary finds.

This time of year happily marks the official opening of our city’s outdoor pools (namely Kit’s Beach, Second Beach and New Brighton Pools). So why not get into gear on Sunday (post obligatory coffee or brunch) and head out to one of the above? Not only do they offer up a stunning view of the cityscape, they’re also heated and partially filled with salt water – pretty unique bragging rights. Season passes will also be available so you can aim to work this into your exercise regime.

Come Sunday night, you really ought to head down to the Vancouver Urban Winery and partake in a bit of a Food Fight fundraiser that’s guaranteed to make a difference and have you hob-knobbing with top foodies from around town. The cause: one of Vancouver’s most-loved chefs, Owen Lightly (a long time supporter of various charities himself), is suffering from stage 4 colon cancer and needs a bit of help with some forthcoming bills related to his treatment. Participating chefs, staff and suppliers have donated time for Owen’s cause, which speaks volumes – and we definitely think you ought to head down to show your support.  Though tickets are sold out online, more tickets will be sold at the door for $60. It is a great example of Vancouver’s culinary community coming together for a great cause and something worth noting.
