Start off the weekend by skipping kitchen duty at home and head over to Kitsilano hot spot Chewie’s Steam & Oyster Bar located at 2201 Yew Street for a NoLA-inspired feast. We’ve found ourselves shamelessly venturing back since they opened amidst the holiday madness. We love the open-air concept (all 2500 square feet of it) that’s conducive to boisterous impromptu mingling and inexplicably late nights. But it’s the food that’s truly got our attention. Bite into an order of crispy buttermilk chicken, order their crab cakes and be sure to dig into a bowl of Jambalaya. You’ll thank us later.
Stroll into your Saturday and grab a coffee and pastry at The Blue Tree Cafe in Coal Harbour before heading out for a leisurely stroll around the Seawall. Next, head over to the Hideaway at the Waldorf Hotel for a worthy cause (and excuse to do some serious shopping) at the Vancouver Fashion Blogger’s Clothing Sale. A dozen of our city’s finest fashionistas are bringing the goods to the proverbial table with fine finds and carefully-culled statement pieces guaranteed to help you add that perfect something to your wardrobe in time for spring. A $2 entrance fee is all it takes and doors open at noon.
En route home, be sure to grab yourself the obligatory 6-pack (and green dye?) for a night of St. Patrick’s-fuelled fun. The city is alive with options geared toward all-things Leprechaun-inspired. A few noteworthy ones on our agenda: Celtic Fest 2012 has a plethora of live music activities happening around town; The Vogue is hosting Delhi 2 Dublin’s BIG St. Pat’s Night Out. Alternatively, be a repeat-offender and head back to the Waldorf for their official Flux Pavilion after-party in honour of St. Patty’s day and, to round it all out, there’s an Anti-St. Patrick’s Day Polka Party happening over at Fortune.
Not so much into the green theme? No problem. As a throwback to the good ol’ days of Atari, why not check out the Vancouver Retro Gaming Expo to find your fix. Try your hand at the Mario Kart 64 tournament or perhaps participate in a Tetris tournament. They’ll even have a ‘nerd burlesque’ performance and live DJ on-site…and plenty of beer to go around.
Enjoy a lazy start to Sunday at home before getting decked out in your finest green garb and heading downtown to catch the 11am start of Vancouver’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Post-parade, keep the fun vibes alive and unleash your inner child by heading over for a few hours of careless fun at the PlayDome at BC Place. For only $25, you get access to more than 45 rides, all part of Canada’s largest indoor festival.
