Vancouver Weekender: July 5 through 7, 2013

Gear up for a full Friday night and check out the recently opened Latin-infused Cuchillo Restaurant for a spicy start to the weekend. Having just (softly) opened its doors to their gorgeous, sleek new space over the long weekend, they’ve had a chance to work out the kinks and are 100% ready to serve up some seriously tantalizing treats. With a menu ranging from a heavy assortment of Taquerias to Ceviche, Antojitos and sweet looking Ensaladas, your appetite will thank you. Saddle up to the extensive communal table that practically runs the length of this 93-seat restaurant and you’re guaranteed to make friends.

Next up, be sure to check out the latest artsy offerings over at Cycle Chic Social (at Sugar Studios). There will be a fashion show featuring locally-made goods, DJs on site, a cash bar to tempt you, video installations and more guaranteed to keep you up late.

In keeping with Friday’s sampling of Latino cuisine, keep the cultural vibe alive and head over to the Carnaval del Sol (on all weekend) at Granville Street downtown. Now in its 5th year of celebration all things Latin American, we think you’ll enjoy taking in the boisterous scene. Whether you’re up for sampling different foods, taking in a street soccer match, trying your hand at a pop-up salsa or zumba lesson, Caranval is the next best thing to travelling to the region… well, almost.

Also worth checking out this weekend, head to the newly relocated EP!C sustainable living festival, which has scored new digs at the stunning Van Dusen Botanical Gardens. You can’t get much greener than this. There are plenty of reasons to hustle on over starting with the Sip & Savour Garden, the sounds of Kuba Oms, Ali Milner, The Paperboys and more, a Food Truck Alley and Sustainable Marketplace.

If you’re looking for a reason to jet out of town for the weekend, look (and go) no further than Kelowna for your fix. Not only will you be privy to crazy heat (yup, temps will be hitting the high 30s), but its home to Keloha Music & Arts Festival (July 5 through 7). Multi-day passes are still available, though will likely sell out. Check out acts such as The Zolas, The Boom Booms, Yukon Blonde, The Washboard Union, Arkells, The Trews and many, many more.

Come Sunday, pack a picnic, grab your bike and make full use of the day by scoring yourself a spot at Spanish Banks Beach where you can work up a sweat with a game of volley ball. Alternatively (and if you’re really feeling adventurous), make the journey out to Deep Cove and rent a kayak or SUP for a few hours of oceanside chill time. We recommend reserving early as items are in demand.

En route back into town, swing by the Ambleside Farmers Market in West Van and procure yourself a week’s worth of local goodies before gearing up for the week ahead.
