Vancouver Weekender: July 4 through 6, 2014

Kick off the first official weekend of July by getting out to explore summer in Vancity. Options are endless and notable; between checking out food carts, the Indian Summer Festival and a bike rave, we're pretty sure you'll manage to fill up your schedule with the city's hottest events

Thursday

The Indian Summer Festival kicks off tonight and is the perfect excuse to pop on your most colourful number and head down to Chinatown for a gala event like no other. This culinary tour of Asia is a definite do-not-miss for special guests, VIPs and partygoers eager to celebrate Indian Summer magic in the heart of the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Gardens. Curated by Vikram Vij, it’s a top foodie tour of Asia complemented by plenty of fine sips, entertainment and more. Find more details here

Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Small Stage point 5 takes over The Emerald for several nights of throwback fun (think: old Vegas-style cabaret and music). The surprise hit of last fall returns for a second round of knockout performances in this one-of-a-kind spectacle that pairs up five local independent musicians with five in-demand dance artists for an evening wrought with audacious and energetic collaborations.  Tickets are $20 (show only), or make it a night and catch dinner and the show for $45.

The ClearlyContacts.ca Open takes over Kitsilano Beach for three days of non-stop volleyball fun. Now celebrating its 23rd year, this tournament that attracts over 20,000 spectators every year guarantees plenty of action. Run by Volleyball BC, the games get going on Friday and feature the best pro beach volleyball athletes from Canada, North America and worldwide with $15,000 in prize money up for grabs.

TOTEM – the latest showcase of creativity from Cirque du Soleil – is now in its final weekend of performances in Vancouver.  TOTEM examines mankind’s relationship with nature and how we’ve impacted both it and each other over time (with an injection of humourous performances throughout). It’s guaranteed to have you awestruck in your seat as you watch the stunning showcase of Gumby-like flexibility unfold under the big yellow top.

Saturday

The Underwear Affair kicks off some panty-clad fun this weekend to help raise awareness of and funds for cancers below the waist. Hundreds of men and women in underwear will hit the streets of Vancouver, walking 5K, running the 10K race, or taking part in the Booty Hunt. Participants will be raising funds for life-saving research for cancer at the BC Cancer Foundation. This unique fundraising event supports groundbreaking research at the BC Cancer Agency and is helping to change the cancer landscape in B.C. and beyond.

The #BikeRave takes place on Saturday at 8pm and is set to get you pedaling to the music alongside hundreds of others as part of its annual glowtastic mobile dance party on wheels. As in previous years, there will be a custom, meticulously hand-crafted five-hour mix for this epic event featuring the city’s top electronic producers. If you’re partaking in the epic collective ride around town, download the mix (available shortly at www.BIKERAVE.CA) and wear your fanciest rave-inspired outfit. Pack all necessary refreshments and decorate your bike with fancy lights, glowsticks and more.

Sunday

Food Cart Fest (starting at noon until 5pm) is a weekly gathering of Vancouver’s top food carts complemented by community markets, live music and DJs, craft food vendors, kids activities, and more. Food Cart Fest was created to highlight the diverse and delicious culture of street food in Vancouver. Not strictly for foodies, though, Food Cart Fest is also about enjoying the summer with friends and family.
