Vancouver Weekender: July 18 through 20, 2014

Thursday

Get refreshed in advance of the weekend and check out The Juice Truck Cafe for a pre-weekend fix. The popular Gastown-based Juice Truck has made a move to something more concrete and just opened a bright, airy Cafe at 28 West 5th Avenue. They’ll be serving up plenty of their specialty cold-pressed juices, breakfast bowls and grab-and-go-meals to keep you properly fuelled.  Score plenty of other health food items as well as a supply of juice to take home for the morning after a big night out.

The folks behind Vancouver Food Tours are offering a Modern Chinatown Tasting Tour this Thursday and it’s definitely worth considering given the increase in restaurants and bistros in the revamped area. You’ll dine and drink your way around Chinatown tarting with a cocktail reception at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden to set the tone for the night. The culinary tour includes four stops, drinks (with non-alcoholic available), and is a great way to get acquainted with the neighbourhood. Find more details here.

Friday

Boulevard Kitchen + Oyster Bar has just opened in time for the weekend and is our choice pick for a post-work pick-me-up beverage on Friday. You’ll want to head down to this sexy, newly redesigned place at the Sutton Place Hotel where you’ll be treated to a curated cocktail and wine list, fresh twists on West Coast favourites (thanks to Executive Chef Alex Chen) and take in the scene from a patio table.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday

If you’re one of the pre-planner lucky YPs who managed to score a weekend-long wristband and camping spot for the Pemberton Music Festival, good on ya… we’re jealous. It’s pretty much the festival to head to this summer (well, next to Squamish Music Fest happening next month) and brings plenty of talent to the laidback mountain town of Pemberton. Check out Snoop, Outkast, Nine Inch Nails, comedian Bob Saget and The Flaming Lips (and more). Be sure to pack your Wellies, things are bound to get dirty.

The 37th Vancouver Folk Festival is happening this weekend at Jericho Beach. It’s an easy ride along W. 4th Avenue through Kitsilano. With more than 60 different acts taking over several major stages, a hippy market, food vendors and artisans, there is no shortage of activity.

Saturday

VUSI Summer Series Dance Party is back and taking over the New West Pier for a full Saturday of DJ beats, dancing, socializing and discrete drinking. Wear your party hat, pack a picnic and prepare for plenty of fun – things get rolling at around 1pm and run all day long.

Sunday

If you haven’t already pedaled your way over to check out this summer’s Food Cart Fest, make this is the Sunday you do just that. It’s a hugely popular weekly gathering of Vancouver’s top food carts complemented by community markets, DJs, craft food vendors, kids activities, and more. Food Cart Fest was created to highlight the diverse and delicious culture of street food in Vancouver. Not strictly for foodies, Food Cart Fest is also about enjoying the summer with friends and family.
