Vancouver Weekender: January 24 through 26, 2014

Friday night, if you’re not already booked into Bambuddha for Dine Out Vancouver (and why aren’t you?), head to Studio One at the CBC’s Broadcast Centre and catch one of their free concerts as part of ‘The Toque Sessions’ (700 Hamilton Street). Shows start at 7:30pm sharp – there’s a rush line to secure tickets at 6:30pm every day.

Warm up on Saturday by checking out one of the more than 60 different flavours featured by various participants of the Hot Chocolate Festival. Who doesn’t love sipping their way through the perfect wintertime treat? Prep your taste buds, there are definitely some inventive concoctions available this year – and it’s the perfect excuse to get out and do some culinary exploration around our city.

After you’ve filled up on chocolate-y goodness, work off those calories and make your way over to one of Vancouver’s newest spots to get your bounce on (out of the club, that is). We’re talking about the Extreme Air Park, where they take trampolines super seriously. Catch an ‘AI’robics class, play extreme basketball, hit a foam pit or pretend you can do gymnastics with grace. Whatever, House of Pain would definitely approve.

In keeping with this Weekender’s ‘cuisine’ theme, don’t miss Oyama Sausage Co’s infamous Choucroute/Sauerkraut Fest happening this weekend. It features a plethora of meaty bites, kassler, bacons and plenty more to fill you up. Sip craft beers courtesy of Granville Island Brewery and perfectly paired Rieslings and Gewurztraminers from Liberty Wine Merchants on Granville Island to complete your meal in an authentic European way.

Come Sunday morning, take advantage of the sunny, above zero weather (sorry, not sorry Toronto!) and scoot out for some fresh air first thing by hitting up the Seawall for a stroll or cruise. Work up an appetite. Whatever you opt for, you’ll need it for our next suggestion: the East Side Brunch Crawl, presented by Vancouver Foodster and the Drive BIA. You’ll want an empty belly for this #DOVF event, given it’s your $40 passport to plenty of good eats. Stops are planned for Yolks Breakfast, Turks Coffee, Timbre Restaurant and plenty more.

While you’re out and about (and if you still have room), stop by The Vancouver Art Gallery and check out this weekend’s Street Food City III. This is the food truck fest that started it all, featuring some of the hottest offerings on four wheels in the city. Feast your way through Vij’s Railway Express, Roaming Dragon, Mom’s Grilled Cheese, Aussie Pie and polish it up with some Holy Perogy fixings. That should keep you well fuelled through until Monday

Finally, wind down the weekend with a little bit of culture and catch one of the PuSh Festival presentations before recuperating for the workweek ahead.
