Vancouver Weekender: January 15 through January 18, 2015

Vancouver is finally awake again after emerging from a hazy and fog-filled start to 2015.

This weekend holds a ton to consider adding to your social calendar. Whether you’re a health freak, fashion lover, need to learn more from your fellow professionals, or just love hot chocolate – there is a little bit of everything for everyone.

Except marshmallows. You have to bring your own marshmallows.

THURSDAY

The YWCA of Vancouver is having a Members Clinic event tonight beginning at 5:15pm. Neuroscientist and wellness coach, Catherine Roscoe Bar will be the host of the talk that will have you walking away knowing how to super-charge your brain and how to boost your body’s self-healing mechanisms.

Next week: caring for migraines. Talk about stuff we actually need to know more about.

CANWit – the Canadian Women in Technology Association – is holding a post-work industry networking night at the Lions Pub in the Terminal City Club for all female professionals tonight. Come armed with business cards to pass out to new connections, stay for the fun door prizes.

It’s not all about the ladies, we promise.

Online shopping site for guys, Frank & Oak is celebrating the opening of their seasonal Vancouver shop in Gastown with a party.

Completely free to join, just RSVP here, pop by for a couple drinks while taking in the new collection, and have the chance to meet everyone behind the face of Frank & Oak including Founder Ethan Song.

FRIDAY

Dine Out Vancouver Festival starts tonight. If you’re thinking of making resos to celebrate the arrival of the weekend – expect it to be tough. With more restaurants than ever participating with special menus and jam-packed bookings, now is actually the time to take advantage of what Dine Out has to offer.

Skip your usual meal and discover new culinary experiences while getting major bang for your buck.

The 2nd annual Vancouver Sketch Comedy Festival starts today. They say you can think of this as an event where your favourite local comedians meet at the farmers’ market. Shows are already selling out so if you want to attend the funniest farmers’ market all year, you’d better get on it.

SATURDAY

As a part of Dine Out Vancouver, the second Gastown Brunch Crawl is happening today. We don’t know about you, but we’ll fast for a day to make room for all the goodness this happy little walk of food will bring on. Presented by Van Foodster, you’ll start at a decent time, (10am), as you explore some of the best that the neighbourhood has to offer for breakfast servings.

If you don’t mind spending part of your Saturday giving back, head over to the first Wreck Beach Cleanup of the season. Run by the Vancouver Chapter of the global not-for-profit organization, The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of oceans, waves and beaches.

The Pop Up Wedding Shoppe has thought of it all for the bride who’s planning her big day. For a limited time in Gastown, this pop-up will bring together the best of the vendors and experts who help in making sure you look and feel your best as you tie the knot. From their champagne appointment that takes cares of all your consultations to a catered lunch experience, The Pop Up Wedding Shoppe has thought it all through to make wedding planning a breeze.

SUNDAY

Wondering what this gluten-free hype is all about? Can’t find something that’s gluten-free and actually tastes good? The Gluten Free Expo should help with that.

Whether you’re just discovering a cleaner way to eat or have serious dietary restrictions, some of the biggest health brands and food businesses will be on site showcasing the latest products.

Oh, and you will walk away with so many samples that you arms will hurt from carrying them all.

On the flipside, if you love milk and marshmallows and chocolate, The Hot Chocolate Festival is where you should head.

Soirette, Thierry, Mink, Butter Baked Goods, Thomas Haas, Terra Breads…the list of some of the best local restaurants and cafes involved in this month-long festival goes on. The best hot chocolate creations are waiting to be tried. Just ask for almond milk. That will balance out all the marshmallows right?

Do you invest in gold and mining companies? Have a keen interest in renewable energy? Vancouver Resource Investment Conference is happening right now and is the largest resource investment conference in the world. You’ll hear from powerful influencers and leaders in their respective resource fields while also having access to executive members of global corporate companies who will be on site for one-on-one discussions.
