Vancouver Weekender: January 11 through 13, 2013

This Friday, we’re all about getting a kick-start on all things food-related with a number of new spots having popped-up around town during (and just post) the holidays.

On our list of must try’s… Finch’s Market has opened the doors of its new Strathcona locale offering the same tasty selection of loaded baguettes, artisanal offerings and additional take-away fare.

Not in that neck-of-the-woods? Head down to Yaletown where another new spot recently opened its doors over the holidays: The Wine Bar, or TWB, next to Provence Marinaside. With more than 50 wines available by the glass, and plenty of tasty tapas on the menu with a waterfront location to add to the ambiance, it’s definitely worth noting. And if you have yet to check out yet another newbie to the food scene in the Yaletown hood, be sure to stop by The Parlour Restaurant around the corner for a pint. We’ve noted this new YVR hot spot in a previous post, and the buzz has only grown. They’ve got plenty of ambiance, a DJ on-site, as well as sips to satiate. Taste test their take on Burrata and order up The Dirty.

Searching for another spot for a bit of social action post eats? We definitely think you ought to pay a last visit to the beloved, historic Waldorf Hotel, which (as of last night) announced that they are closing their doors permanently as of next weekend.

We have thoroughly (or shall we say, notably) enjoyed many a night ensconced in their Tiki lounge and caught plenty of up and coming musical acts at their unique venue. As one of our city’s true landmarks (it’s been around since the 1950s), The Waldorf has long since been a hub for creative entertainment and more.

If you’re looking for something to get you out of the house on Saturday, we highly recommend you grab your skis or board and beeline it over to the coastal mountains on the North Shore where they’ve just had another little dump of fresh powder. Sunshine is finally in the forecast – so take advantage and work on that goggle tan. If you’re having trouble deciding which slopes to hit up, we’ll make it simple: Cypress Mountain offers the most runs and has a base of about 400 cm of snow.  Get out and enjoy their picturesque backdrop, varied terrain and a full day of runs before popping into the Crazy Raven for a deserving plate of their piled-high nachos.

Saturday night, we are all about checking out the latest artist on the climb up the musical radar…Hopsin. Straight from LA and channelling Eminem, this incredible new hip-hop phenomenon has toured the world and is set to bring his style to YVR for one night only at The Rickshaw Theatre. Tickets are still available but will likely sell out, so don’t wait.

Post lazy wake up and morning coffee, be sure to roll out of bed and over to the Artech Gallery for their Sunday Shop Local Market. Touted as part culture crawl, part craft fair and part farmers market, we expect you’ll find an eclectic mix of just about everything to fill your fridge, home and perk up your look.

Unwind on Sunday afternoon with a touch of theatre and catch one of the final performances of Don Juan at the Blackbird Theatre. They’ve worked on adding a unique twist to this tale of an irresistible rogue and have expertly created a provocative adaptation of Molière’s scandalous and satiric comedy accompanied by a newly commissioned rock mass in Latin. There are only two shows left, so don’t wait. Show starts at 2pm.
