Vancouver Weekender: February 14 through 16, 2014

Whether it's wellness and healthy living tips you're looking for, an excuse to ditch the diet in lieu of some home-baked goods, or must-attend Winter-themed celebrations you want to get in on, our Weekender delivers all the goods from Vancouver's social scene

Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Dances for a Small Stage is back for the weekend and might be a great, last-minute addition to your Valentine’s Day mix (if you’ve left it to the last minute). It features 30 different shows taking place at various venues around the city with works of various talented artists. Basically, the theme of this fest features established contemporary dance in unconventional venues on a 10×13-foot stage.

Winterruption takes place on Granville Island for the weekend and will help recapture the city’s Olympic spirit. Be sure to check out one of the many special events taking place on the various days, catch live music, artist exhibits, discover local food and experience pop-up performances courtesy of Vancouver’s Fringe Festival. As part of the 9th annual island festival, Winterruption is set to showcase a selection of Granville Island-produced spirits including a tour of the new Liberty Distillery.

In keeping with the seasonal theme, The Great Canadian Winter Festival is back at the River Market for its 2nd annual celebration of Canadian food, fun, art, sports and more. Satisfy your craving for poutine at their first-ever Poutine Battle Royale, check out a table hockey tournament, pop by the Music Box Music and Theatre Company, or try your hand at a little bingo.

Northwest Comedy Festival is guaranteed to have you howling all weekend long as it lands in our city. Headlining the comedic showcase is Pee Wee Herman, who will host ‘Best of the Fest’. It’s a great opportunity to explore the city’s top venues, take in stand-up performances, catch improv sessions and generally get your laugh on.

The Wellness Show is back at the Vancouver Convention Centre with plans to be bigger and better than ever. More than 300 vendors will be on site, alongside health pros and holistic practitioners available to answer questions and share knowledge throughout the weekend. Catch helpful seminars, presentations by top health gurus, and shop your way through the Organic Marketplace, discovering the latest trends and lifestyle tips.

Saturday

Keep it healthy and local on Saturday by heading over to the Winter Farmers Market at Nat Bailey Stadium. Stock up on locally grown and sourced fruits and veggies, load up on homemade baked treats, and discover tasty bites as you sample your way around hundreds of vendors on site.

In keeping with the go local market spirit, this Saturday afternoon head out to New Westminster and pay a visit to the River Market’s special Artisan’s Fair. Check out plenty of pop-up shops and support local businesses as you explore the picturesque setting. Artisans from the area and beyond will be on hand showcasing their creations. Score unique items for your home, gifts and more as you shop books, knitwear, carvings, food items, beauty products, jewelry and more.

If you have a pet, or just love animals, you might want to reserve some time this Saturday to head out to the Tradex Trade & Exhibition Centre to check out the Pet Lover Show. With more than 200 exhibitors as well as 40 different speakers, it’s a definite must if you are on the hunt for a new furry friend to add to the home mix. Score animal facts, training tips and more from animal experts and take in agility and raptor shows, a K9 detection demonstration, and shop the marketplace.

Sunday

Back and delivering plenty of baked goods is the Baker’s Market (at Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre). If you’ve been on a cleanse so far this year, get ready to break a few rules. There’s no admission, free samples, ethnic baked goods, muffins, tarts, chocolates and plenty more. The great thing about the Baker’s Market is that it promotes budding entrepreneurs with its welcome to baking enthusiasts of all kinds.

Get ready to relax on Sunday and attend a special presentation courtesy of the Vancouver Bach Choir. Head over to the Vancouver Academy of Music for the afternoon where you’ll be privy to the latest from “Les and Friends” as part of the series of special afternoon gatherings. It’s an intimate reception that will have you up close and personal with exceptional musicians such as the Bergmann Piano Duo, cellist Joseph Elworthy, mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabo and more. It’s a great way to segue into the workweek ahead while enjoying a very unique experience.
