Vancouver Weekender: December 27 through 29, 2013

Friday, be sure to grab a ticket to the Contact Music Festival that has taken BC Place Stadium by storm with its serious DJ talent. Tickets are still available and will have you and thousands of others grooving to beats until the wee hours. Friday’s headliner is Skrillex, followed suit by Flosstradaums, Makj and more big names from across North America, Europe and Australia.

If you’re not up for a night of dancing, head over to the Rio Theatre. It’s always a great place to land for a hit from theatrical past. On the silver screen this Friday is Bruce Willis’ classic Die Hard ($8).

Hungry for a bit of a culture fix? Then make your way down to Canada Place in the heart of the harbour and catch a screening of FlyOver Canada. They’re hosting a special holiday-themed celebration complete with hot chocolate, cider and live entertainment to help warm you up before you head inside for this unique 4D cinematic ride.

Take advantage of the lazy days afforded by the holidays and strap on some snowshoes, cross-country skis, or grab your board and head up one of the city’s local mountains which have received a dumping of fresh snow (thank you Mother Nature).

On our list of must-visits is Cypress Mountain with both its Nordic and Downhill ski areas fully operable, tube park and optional stop-off at Hollyburn Lodge, where you can treat yourself to a three-course fondue dinner with snowshoe package.

Not feeling that adventurous for the weekend? No problem, stay closer to home and head down to Robson Square where free public skating is still going on. A great option for a little city-style R&R.

Saturday night, head downtown to the Commodore Ballroom and catch home-grown indie talent Said the Whale as they play hits from their current album as well as give the audience a sneak peek at their new album (Hawaii) out soon.  Tickets start at $23 and are available here.

If you haven’t yet indulged yourself on a trip around Stanley Park’s bedecked Bright Nights Christmas Train circuit, be sure to get going (it’s on until the end of the month). It’s the perfect way to indulge your inner kid, and we hear they’ve outdone themselves with the festive spirit this season.

While you’re enjoying the outdoors, be sure to pop by the Stanley Park Ecological Society and take part in their latest Historical Walking Tour (takes place on Sunday). It’s a great way to get out and explore one of our city’s largest gems and the perfect thing to do with any visiting relatives in town over the holidays.
