Watch Out of Office on our YouTube Channel

Vancouver Weekender: April 27 through 29, 2012

Vancouver is abuzz with new restaurant and lounge openings, which bodes well considering your weekend is about to kick off as soon as you head out of the office Thursday afternoon (the three-day YP weekend, of course). Here's what you can't miss

This Friday, grab a bite guaranteed to have you dreaming of La Dolce Vita en Italia and head over to newly-opened hotspot Via Tevere at 1190 Victoria Drive.  Get there early to ensure you get seated and dive into a pizza pie. We suggest you start with an order of their Frittura Napoletana followed by the simple Margherita and Vesuvio Pizza that offers up a bit of a kick. Next, shift venues and go get cultured around the corner. Catch IZM at The Cultch during their final weekend of performances taking place at 8pm daily. Featuring explosive creative stage performances courtesy of choreographer Crazy Smooth, the moves of notable dancers such as Zepol Rock, Soul Step, Bourik and many more, this evening is super-charged with superb street dancing, emotion and attitude that’ll have you on the edge of your seat. Grab a leisurely Saturday brunch at Riley Park local go-to spot Fray for their selection of Eggs Benny’s and fun tabletop trivia that won’t hurt your brain too much. Other noteworthy menu options we think you’ll enjoy are their cornflake-crusted French toast or the Slaughterhouse, which comes loaded with everything you can possibly associate with a big breakfast. Also on recommendation, try their famous Portobello fries – there’s just really no going back regular ol’ potato.

Post breakfast, bee-line over to Robson Street for a little retail therapy at the newly opened J.Crew (1088 Robson Street). This swanky two-floor fashion haven has been on our radar for some time now and is finally ready to welcome style-savvy YPs looking for their latest on-trend fix.

All shopped out? Might we suggest you swing by BC Place to partake in a little action front and centre? This Saturday marks the return of the BC Place Community Weekend where fans can get in on the on-field action with our home teams. Taking place all day (from noon until 4pm), it’s the perfect opportunity to try your hand at playing goalie for the Whitecaps, or scoring a touchdown for the BC Lions.

With this week’s Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards honouring a plethora of local nosh-worthy spots around town, we think Saturday night offers the perfect excuse for you to head out and test out a few winners. On our notable it-list: Hawksworth Restaurant, who (among many awards) won ‘Restaurant of the Year’; Gastown’s L’Abattoir (claimed ‘Best Casual’); and Kingyo Izakaya, for ‘Best Casual Japanese’.

Stroll into Sunday and head over to support a great cause at eTap (Top Chef Canada Winner Dale MacKay’s downtown spot) for Qmunity. Starting at 11am, this all-day brunch benefit brings to the table live entertainment, prizes, a selection of signature brunch dishes, live performances by the Burlesque Beauties and drag queens. Sounds like a guaranteed great time to us! Find more info and purchase your $25 ticket here.

Make the most of the remainder of Sunday-funday with a visit to Granville Island Market to load yourself up on farm fresh goods and plenty of other artisanal finds that’ll fill your fridge for the week ahead. En route home, make a pit stop at Jackson’s Deli in Kitsilano to grab a few choice cuts, sweet and savoury treats (we love their freshly-made selection of pies) and plenty more. There’s something about supporting a family-run business that’s been around since 1911 that bodes well with us.

Finally, given that Sunday often equals Caesar-time (at least in our books), swing by The Local Public Eatery for one of their signature drinks served in-a-boot and catch a bit of football action before calling it a night.
