Up the Barre: Barre Body Fit

Fitting in a workout in the midst of multiple commitments can be a constant struggle for young professionals. We’re often so busy with work, volunteer commitments, and social events that finding time to focus on the things that make you happy, healthy, and restored can be a challenge. Luckily, Calgary YPs now have a new fitness option that promises to define, lift, and sculpt your entire body: Barre Body Fit

Barre Body Fit is Calgary’s first studio to bring sculpting barre classes to Calgary thanks to long-time fitness and yoga instructor Marlo Brausse. For the past five months, Marlo has been training with Tracey Mallet, creator of the celeb fave Booty Barre(R) method. Marlo has since set up shop at the West Hillhurst Community Centre dance studio, where classes are held seven times a week.

Drawing from pilates, dance, and yoga, the foundation of barre is the core, where our bodies draw strength and balance. Throughout the one-hour class, you will be reminded to engage your core as you perform a variety of low-impact moves to strengthen your legs, butt, back, and upper body. The ultimate outcome? Longer, leaner muscles, fat loss, improved posture, better balance, and killer confidence: “When you work out you feel good, and when you feel good about yourself it transcends into everything that you do.”

Marlo’s energy and passion for barre sculpting is evident when you take in a class. Far from what you’d expect from a traditional ballet or dance class, this class is energetic and fun, and will get your heart rate up. You’ll be plie-ing and lifting your upper and lower body for so many reps that every single muscle fibre will be screaming at you. For those better acquainted with traditional squats, you’ll find the slight change in form (ankles together, feet slightly out-turned, knees tracking over your feet) to generate a seriously intense burn in muscles that you did not even know existed. Barre Body Fit is suitable for everybody, regardless of fitness level or experience; modifications and hands-on support are provided to make sure you are using proper form, which is essential not only to derive maximum benefits but to avoid injuries.
