"America's Dog" is a Canadian: Miss P, a beagle bred by Lori Crandlemire of Enderby, B.C., was awarded top dog at the World Cup of canine competition, New York City's Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

New York City’s Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is the World Cup of canine competition. And while the champion of the two-day showcase earns the coveted title of “America’s Dog,” this year’s winner was a purebred Canadian.

Miss P, a beagle bred by Lori Crandlemire of Enderby, B.C., took the top dog honour in front of a packed Madison Square Garden. In addition to having her name forever etched in dog lore, she scored appearances on morning TV shows, a meeting with Donald Trump, lunch at prominent Manhattan restaurant Sardi’s, and a walk-on part in the Broadway hit musical Kinky Boots.

It doesn’t make sense, we know, but such privilege is to be expected from a spectacle that invites more excitement to the Garden than a Knicks game.

We may have 99 problems, Canada, but a, um, dog ain’t one.
