Trending: Coordinating Crop Top and Pencil Skirts for Spring ’14

Though crop tops were spotted on the streets, runways and even red carpets over the last couple of seasons, the persistent trend is back again with a vengeance. Many of Spring 2014’s runway shows showed off belly-baring tops in a more sophisticated way by pairing them with matching bottoms.

Strongly resembling the look of a dress, coordinating top and skirt sets give off a more polished and posh semblance than most of the midriff-baring looks seen in recent months. Adding an exotic print also adds flair to the craze.

Opting for a conservative crop top is a more office-appropriate take on the trend, much like this matching set from Honor’s Spring 2014 runway show (right) and Rose Bryne’s floral-laced Erdem dress with black chiffon panels (left).

Prints and florals are a favourite of celebs such as Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh, who chose a snake print set by Bill + Mar; Katy Perry wore a Hervé Léger by Max Azria set, and Shay Mitchell showed off her figure in a Clover Canyon ensemble.

To accentuate their curves, both Beyonce and Jennifer Lawrence lined up their looks in stripes.

Minimalistic, coordinating colours, as seen on Shailene Woodley, keeps this fashion-forward look more reserved. Woodley wore a structured, two-piece ivory set with neutral, strappy, Jimmy Choo heels. She did the trend again with a two-piece Proenza Schouler cropped turtleneck and midi skirt in black. Kim Kardashian achieved a more sultry look in a lace, monochromatic pencil skirt and bustier by Nina Ricci.

Want to try out the trend but don’t want to splurge on the designer prices? ASOS, Topshop and Nasty Gal, as well as many small, independent designers offer the coordinating craze for reasonable prices.
