Toronto Weekender: June 21 through 24, 2012

From two massive, must-attend charity events to an endless supply of notable restaurant recommendations, our Weekender is filled with everything you need to know about Toronto's social scene for the next three days

It’s the weekend again, and without hesitation let’s look to the forecast for what’s on in Toronto that’ll make any YP a happy camper…

Thursday
Tonight, join Mount Sinai at Maro in Liberty Village for a night of opulence and intrigue, featuring exquisite vignettes from the boudoirs of Cosabella and ResultWear. Indulge in hors d’oeuvres and cocktails in support of women’s health and cancer research at Mount Sinai Hospital. The event is organized by Future Sinai, a group of young philanthropists who are working to advance, promote and fundraise for the Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary.

Also tonight is the Toronto Zoo’s Seafood for Thought, an engaging and elegant dinner to discover how your choices protect the health of soil, water, and ocean wildlife. The unique outdoor setting, delicious seafood tastings prepared by Toronto’s top chefs, chocolate fountain, wine pairings and of course some wild animal encounters makes Seafood For Thought a fundraising event you don’t want to miss.

Friday
For your Friday after-work dinner and drinks, make a stop into Ascari Enoteca. They continue to impress and amaze us with their great food, vibrant atmosphere, and sophisticated wine and drinks selection. Definitely a perfect way to kick off the weekend.

Every summer the Drake Hotel brings in a new wave of decor, ambiance, cocktails and grub for their summer styling, and this year is bound to be one of the biggest hits yet. Drakeland officially launches today, featuring an amusement park direction replete with roller coaster in the lobby, lemonade stand, amusement park-type food and drinks, and sights of all kinds.

Saturday
The address and name are the same at this new junction bar/restaurant. 3030 Dundas West opened recently, bringing live music, great drinks, and some delicious grub to the Westend. But, for today, stop in and try their brunch. It’s classic and delicious, just what Saturday mornings are for.

In celebration of McEwan grocer’s 3rd anniversary, Celeb Chef Mark McEwan and Fidel Gastro will be having a sandwich smackdown to see who can make the best sammy. This ultimate smackdown will be going down outside at McEwan from 11:30 am to 4pm, rain or shine. The best part is a portion of the proceeds from this event will go towards Second Harvest – Canada’s largest food rescue mission.

Let your palate weigh in while you witness the sparring between Mill Street Brewmaster Joel Manning and 13th Street Winery Sommelier Peter Bodnar Rod as they go palate to palate over beer and wine at Smackdown for Grapetown. Expert beer and wine judges will also share their knowledge on beer and wine pairings as you enjoy a delicious feast from El Gastronomo Vagabundo and Amaya with plenty of beer and wine to wash it all down.

Tonight, the Friends For Life Foundation presents its 7th annual charity benefit in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada and the oncology unit at SickKids Hospital. This year’s gala, which is taking place at LOFTRaum @ UrbanAmish, will feature musical performances, a live and silent auction, culinary creations from some of Toronto’s top chefs and the chance to mix and mingle with hundreds of socially-conscious young professionals.

Sunday
For brunch, make a little trip over to Bloor West and grab a bite at favourite Insomnia. The brunch is ample, the Caesars substantial, and the vibe perfect for next-morning red eyes.

The Redpath Waterfront Festival, presented by the Waterfront BIA, returns June 21st to 24th. Headlined by Saltscapes, the event brings the best of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick’s East Coast lifestyle with music, art, culture and cuisine to HTO Park.
