Toronto Weekender: January 10 through 13, 2013

Welcome, dear Notables, to another edition of the Weekender. It seems like only a week ago we were telling you what was, wait,it was only a week ago. Ah, well. To redirect your attention from our irritating intro, check out what’s going on in the city this weekend…

Thursday
Pop on by Hawthorne Food and Drink tonight as dinner has finally launched. Just a few weeks since Hawthorne’s opening for early day/lunch, the new restaurant from Chef Eric Wood is bringing us some tasty bites – and booze – circa dinner time. The menu launched but last night, so get in early to be one of the early adopters.

Head over to KITCH Bar tonight for some laughs during Kitch Komedy, a weekly event that brings booze, buds, and bellowing laughter together to kick off le weekend. If previous nights are any indication – and they seem to always be – this Thursdays troupe should not disappoint. And hey, even if they do, start a drinking game with a chug for every awful pun…

Friday
Buonanotte has arrived. Yes, the Toronto outpost of Montreal supper club Buonanotte has taken over the space left in Ame’s wake. Featuring a gorgeous brass grid ceiling, exposed brick, and a muraled west wall, the space is MTL chic for YYZ. The menu piggybacks on the Italian craze, and the buzz already leads us to believe this is one move for the history books. Currently serving friends and family, be sure to stay tuned for an official opening in the coming weeks.

Aria Entertainment Complex has brought a hit of Vegas to Toronto in the form of a massive megaclub on Peter Street. With four rooms – all showcasing their own distinctive personality – and a skydome that reveals the sky (come summer, natch), Aria is trying to accomplish what Circa couldn’t: The dream of a scene worthy of the world. Check it out on Friday night.

Saturday
DYNE on Avenue has taken over the space left by Malena on, no surprises here, Avenue Road. With a mix of Asian and European cuisine – most menu items have a couple out-of-left-field ingredients that lend to a proper fusion offering – a relaxing atmosphere, and some serious cocktails, DYNE is the perfect place to, well, dine on Saturday night.

Embrace the cold at the Harbourfront Centre tonight for another edition of DJ Skate. Some of Toronto’s top DJs take to the stage to spin tracks and blare beats while you groove and shake on the ice. On Saturday, get ready for a decade of dance as DJ Manifest lays down a set of his signature style.

Femme Fatale is hosting the night over at UNIUN, the new club that overtook Devil’s Martini. A 25+ crowd means uni kids are out of the fold, making way to a more sophisticated club experience. Beautiful ladies, studly fellas, and DJ Jed Dadson are all on the menu during Saturday night’s Femme Fatale collab.

Sunday
Walk the aisle today to say goodbye to The Wedding Co. Show, the penultimate experience for those on the trip to the alter. The 12th annual event features the finest in Toronto’s wedding industry, with over 100 designers, artists, services and more. The perfect way to prep for yours or your kin’s summer nuptials, The Wedding Co. Show is a gorgeous affair for those ready to say, “I do.”

With the weather still frigid, our thoughts are on comfort food. And what better spot to get our fix on than Cheesewerks. From gourmet fondue to grilled cheese lovin’, this spot has artisanal cheese offerings on lock. Sunday night they present the Golden Grilled Awards… aka… a cheesy viewing party for the Golden Globes. It’s the perfect time to pop by, try out the specially golden four-course menu, and kick off Hollywood awards season.
