Toronto Weekender: April 4 through 7, 2013

With Spring finally starting to rear its head (can we repeat… finally!), we’re looking to have a fresh weekend to match the new season…

Thursday
The Pomegranate Restaurant has a new little sister in the form of Tavoos, which opened recently at 1120 College Street West. Featuring refined takes on foods from different regions of Iran, this Persian restaurant boasts a beautiful little interior with art and decor reflecting its cuisine’s origins. In an area dominated by Italian food, it’s great to see a different dining style setting up shop, and it’s the perfect out-of-the-norm cuisine to start your weekend.

Get something new for the season ahead tonight at the 9th annual C Magazine Auction, a contemporary art fundraiser featuring works donated by 60 of Canada’s best emerging, mid-career and established artists. The live auction takes place tonight at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA).

Friday
When Fressen shut its doors a few months ago, vegans and vegetarians alike felt like they’d lost a best friend. But, just a few days ago, Fressen was resurrected as Grasslands. Herbivores rejoice! Still located at 478 Queen Street West, Grasslands is an evolution of Fressen, refining the already refined vegan/vegetarian cuisine with a slick new look. A refreshing Spring dinner if ever there was one!

Starting Friday and running through Sunday at the Direct Energy Centre, the Good Food and Drink Festival will bring just that: really good food and drinks. With dozens of exhibitors, Eat St. food trucks, celebrity chefs, demonstrations, and more, this is one show no self-proclaimed foodie will want to miss.

Saturday
Tie those laces, stretch those calves, and fill your reusable water bottles because Harry’s Spring Run Off takes to the streets on Saturday. Registrants’ donations will help support Prostate Cancer and the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. Leading off from High Park, do some good for yourself and for others with either the 5k or 8k run/walk.

The Really Really Free Market is on Saturday afternoon at Campbell Park. This community event is really… no really… free. Bring what you can spare, take what you need, leave the rest. It’s kind of like a potluck, only for goods and services. At the end of the day, all leftover items will be donated to various community based sites.

Travel back through time to the mysticism of lost civilizations at Ancient Prom on Saturday night, the annual mass fundraising event by the Young Patrons Circle for the Royal Ontario Museum. Hosted by MTV’s Aliya-Jasmine Sovani and CP24’s Gurdeep Ahluwalia, Ancient PROM at the ROM (100 Queen’s Park) will be an unforgettable night of entertainment, dancing, luxurious lounges, and gourmet fare.

Sunday
Get Lovestruck on Sunday! Hosted at 2nd Floor Events, Lovestruck is the ultimate non-trade show for wedding and special events. Hosted by Darling and Daisy, Lovestruck exhibits the best that the event planning industry has to offer; taking guests through beautifully styled events that are sure to awe, entertain and inspire.

#BrewBenefitTO is on Sunday night in the city. On Sunday, sample a diverse range of local Ontario craft brews in aid of The Stop Community Food Centre. Twelve craft beers are up for the tasting at six different venues in the Esplanade and Front St. area, all within walking distance of the downtown core. A ticket to this event includes the cost of beer at each participating location, and special $5 bites will be available at each stop.
