Today’s Notable 3some in Toronto: February 25, 2014

Here’s a trio of the hottest things you can do on good ‘ol Tuesday.*

Paul Verhoeven
Where: TIFF Bell Lightbox
When: 8:45pm

This guy directed Total Recall (yes, the original), RoboCop (again, the first one), Basic Instinct, Showgirls, Starship Troopers, and more. Apparently he’s even a national hero in the Netherlands. TIFF is kicking off a retrospective ‘devoted to the sardonic and salacious sinema of the Dutch (provoc)auteur’. Tonight you can catch Flesh + Blood, “Verhoeven’s pungently nasty medieval action sage.”

American Authors
Where: The Mod Club
When: 7pm

“We just want to be true to ourselves and share our stories for as long as people are willing to listen.” Those are the words of American Authors frontman Zac Barnett. And considering the success this Brooklyn-based alt rock band has had in only a few short years, we think they’re worth opening your ears up to. Check them out and let us know what you think.

Art Battle 100
Where: The Great Hall, 1087 Queen St W.
When: 7:30pm

Art Battle is a live competitive painting event. Sixteen painters have just 20 minutes to create the best work they can. While they work, you’ll be allowed to move around the room and watch easel-side as they construct their canvas. Armed with brushes, palette knives, or any other non-mechanical implements (yes, fingers are okay), artists work with acrylic paint to create, we hope, masterpieces. After the 20 minutes are up, you and your fellow audience members vote for your favourite painting. Art to the death!

*Of course, no one would blame you for staying in all night to contemplate just how freakin’ cool wolves are.
