It’s here: jam-packed days, sleepless nights (facilitated by the 4am last call) and Toronto in its finest form.
Of course, we’re talking about the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). And each day we are going to bring you 3 of the most notable things from the day and night before.
So, about last night…
The Carpet: Stand Up to Cancer
We hit Andrew Richards Designs for the Stand Up to Cancer viewing party. Before the pounding rain sadly foiled the live broadcast just a few minutes in, the sun blazed down on the talent-packed carpet. Canadian hottie (yes, still) Jason Priestley, Lauren Holly, Lyriq Bent, Nikki Yanofsky, Dragons’ Den’s David Chilton, Rufus Rainwright, Jian Ghomeshi and Tatiana Maslany all showed up to shower us with their star power. Sadly, the evening’s host, Ben Stiller opted out of the carpet (but we did manage to score a selfie with him inside).
The Film: Zero Recognition
TIFF isn’t only about the huge gala films. There are also some pretty sweet shorts, like, Zero Recognition, which premiered yesterday as part of the Short Cuts Programme. It stars homegrown talent Lauren Collins (Degrassi: The Next Generation, Kroll Show, Take the Lead) and Ben Lewis (Degrassi: The Next Generation, Lost Girl, Suits) and both screenings quickly sold out. Why will you like it? It’s a smart tongue-in-cheek satire about being semi-famous (like the stars are) in our social media obsessed world and trying to online date in the midst of it all.
The Party: Eligible Magazine’s Bachelor Party
The city’s most eligible young singles could be found at Flirty Girl Fitness. It was hosted by former stars of The Bachelorette and current stars of Bachelor in Paradise and featured perks like acrobatic pole performances. Unlike the rest we’ve been hitting, it wasn’t invite-only, meaning you didn’t have to be in media or an A-lister to earn access, offering a refreshing departure from the sometimes scene-y TIFF party circuit. The festivities continued into the early hours of the morning at Soho House, which earlier in the evening hosted the cast of Nightcrawler, including lead actors Jake Gyllenhaal (sadly, we missed him) and Rene Russo.
