A Major Tech Hub Will Open in Toronto Soon, Creating 400 New Jobs

It seems like Toronto really is the best city in the world for tech workers.

Thomson Reuters, the multinational mass media and information firm which was originally founded in Toronto, will be returning to the city to open a major tech hub over the next two years.

This new hub will be the sixth largest for the company.

Unsurprisingly, Toronto’s young, diverse workforce was a major selling point, as well as Thomson Reuters CEO Jim Smith’s desire to push back into Canada after focusing a majority of the company’s operations in Stamford, Connecticut.

“We can’t create enough innovation inside our company alone in order to survive. So we need those labs, we need a network and ecosystem of outside developers,” Jim Smith, chief executive officer of Thomson Reuters, said in an interview. “Frankly, the multicultural aspect of Toronto is attractive to us. It’s an environment that looks like our client base around the world.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised the Toronto Technology Centre’s arrival, calling the announcement, “a good day that’s been a long time coming.”

Smith also highlighted several other innovative tech hubs in and around Toronto that his company will be keen to collaborate with once it sets up shop such as Ryerson University’s Digital Media Zone, the MaRS Discovery District, and Communitech in Waterloo.

So, who are they looking for?

“They’ll be development jobs, software engineers designing and building products,” Mr. Smith said. “This will be where we build stuff.”

The tech hub will reside in Bremner Tower, just east of the CN Tower.
