This Shanghai Hotel Might Be the Coolest in the World When All is Said and Done

Most people call it “thinking outside the box”.

But in the context of China’s latest work-in-progress luxury hotel, now formally rescheduled for launch in 2017, the approach that led Atkins to its unprecedented creativity would be more accurately described as “turning it on its head.”

The 5-star Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental, located just 50km outside of Shanghai, is a “groundscraper.”

Unlike some of the other coolest rooftops in the world, the Wonderland’s rooftop will be, well, at “ground” level. Aside from the three top floors, the rest of the hotel is being built into the body of a 100-foot deep abandoned quarry with its remaining 16 stories below the surface of the earth.

And yes, that means that a few floors of their 380 rooms will be underwater looking out into the lake and of course, at the underwater restaurant they are planning to offer.

Taking full advantage of the topography, the hotel also plans to offer their guests watersports on the lake and both rock climbing and bungee jumping on the walls of the quarry.

Given our ongoing climate concerns, it’s worth noting that the structure is designed to be environmentally amicable, using geothermal energy as well as a green roof and solar panels to provide much of its needed power.

Perhaps it won’t be “the best hotel in the world”, but given its estimated $555 million price tag, its 5-star status, and the fact that someone stole it from The Jetsons, you’d think it might compete with some of the most expensive luxury suites out there.

Not the case; at the moment, rooms are being estimated at $300-400US per night.

Seems pretty decent for a luxury groundscraper in China, right?

So pack your bungee underwear and your board shorts. Next hotel bucket-list stop: Shanghai, 2017.
