This Link is Crashing Safari on iPhones and Macs and People Just Keep Clicking It

Before we go any further: DO NOT VISIT CRASHSAFARI.COM.

Unsurprisingly, it does exactly as the URL promises. Though we haven’t tried it ourselves – because why would we? – we’re told visiting the website on Safari will do anything from spawn the spinning rainbow wheel of death on your Macbook to reboot your iPhone. It also causes your phone to heat up, which probably isn’t good long-term.

The site contains a code that calls the HTML5 History API thousands of times in a loop, essentially causing your Safari internet browser to overwhelm itself into arrest. While NBC calls its creators ‘cybercriminals’ who can ‘kill your iPhone’, it’s more of a mildly irritating prank than a malicious attack.

Though most people would hopefully be wise enough not to click a link that so implicitly states its consequence, the concern lies in hyperlinks with alternative text and shortened URLs where the title is more obscure.

Anyway, we’ll leave this here and hope you exercise the necessary restraint not to click or share it —> dangerous URL.
