This is How Long the Average Man Lasts in Bed

How long does the average man last in bed?

That is the age-old question.

Well, there’s a science-backed answer.

Researchers wanted to study premature ejaculation and recruited 500 random heterosexual couples from The Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, the U.K., and the U.S. to track the duration of their sexual encounters using a timer and a diary.

How sexy, right?

The researchers asked the couples to start the timer as soon as vaginal penetration occurred, and stop the timer as soon as the man ejaculated (again, super sexy).

This went on for four weeks. Afterwards, the researchers followed up with the couples to collect the diaries and ask them various demographic questions. The bottom line: they wanted to know how long each man lasted before having an orgasm. The researchers found that the average (median) time before orgasm was about six minutes. The length ranged from six seconds (obviously not ideal) to 53 minutes.

Data scientist Randy Olson stumbled upon this research and made a few helpful plots.

Most of the men lasted between 4 and 11 minutes, with anyone lasting longer than 21 minutes being considered an outlier.

Of course, there are other factors that can come into play. Things like foreplay, the length of time the couple knew each other, if booze was involved, and whether or not a condom was used surely make a difference.

Of particular interest in the study (though not surprising) was the fact that men tended to overestimate the duration of their sexual encounters. According to the authors, the men’s estimates averaged about 1.9 minutes longer than they really were. This represented a 31 per cent overestimation over the six-minute average.

So, the reality is that hours-long marathon sex sessions simply aren’t the reality for most couples in the bedroom.

Perhaps a more important conclusion would have been whether or not a female had an orgasm herself during the six-minute window.
