This is Everything Canadians Loved on iTunes and the App Store in 2014

Like with underwear and prescription notes, you can tell a lot about a person by what they have on their iPhone or iPad and by what they’ve purchased on AppleTV.

Like, a lot.

But people tend to downplay how much they actually like certain mainstream content; “Oh, I didn’t even know that was on there.”

“I just downloaded a bunch of stuff…”

“Katy Perry has a new song??”

Yeah. Freakin’. Right.

Like when everyone pretends not to love Taylor Swift (even though we know you all do) or when guys act like they don’t want to sing along every time Meghan Trainor comes on the radio.

Thankfully, there’s one thing that never lies: the numbers.

Last week, iTunes released its summary of the most popular entertainment content and applications purchased/downloaded through their store in Canada.

Below are the highlights of what our great country thought lit up the studio, stage, and screen in 2014:

#1 Song of the Year in Canada

You’ll be ecstatic to know that it was “Happy” by Pharrell Williams from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack. There were months this year where you couldn’t leave your house without hearing this song, but man, we never got sick of it. That is until Weird Al almost ruined it for everyone with his worst “comedic” remake of all time

Congrats, Pharrell; you’ve come a reeaaaal long way since getting free lapdances with N.E.R.D. (NSFW)

#1 Album of the Year in Canada

DON’T PRETEND LIKE YOU DON’T KNOW. Taylor Swift’s 13-track 1989 took top spot for album downloads, with Shake It Off ranking 7th overall for downloaded songs in Canada.

She’s Clean, she’s got Style, and All She Had to Do Was Stay.  Well, that and make a video that has over 376 million views on Youtube.

#1 Movie of the Year in Canada

Ok, so a lot of kids download stuff on their parents’ iPad. But we know a bunch of you ladies contributed to Frozen being not only the most purchased movie on iTunes Canada in 2014, but the top selling iTunes movie of all time. In other words, Kristen Bell is now officially loaded. We probably could have predicted this after Let It Go took home the Oscar for Best Original Song but even if it didn’t win, there was no chance this Frozen was going to cool off with audiences anywhere.

#1 TV Show of the Year in Canada

Ironically, the medieval soap-opera theme never gets old in this country. Game of Thrones took top spot with its cacophony of sex, murder, and betrayal and of course, dragons, and imps. Winter is here.
