These are Officially the Most Dangerous Intersections in Toronto

Driving in Toronto is bad.

Road rage bad.

We all know that by now.

And while we’ve learned (or continue to learn on a daily basis) to deal with all the pedestrians and traffic, knowing the worst intersections in the city can only help.

Data compiled during a five-year period – 2009-2013 – has revealed the top ten intersections with the highest collision rates in all of Toronto. The total number of crashes at Toronto intersections was weighed against the volume of the intersection on a typical weekday.

The rate reveals the number of collisions for every 1000 vehicles that crossed the intersection.

At the top of the list is the intersection of Lower Jarvis and Lake Shore Blvd, which experiences a disproportionate number of rear-end collisions in particular. Between 2009-2013, the intersection experienced 239 collisions, with almost 24,000 vehicles using the intersection over eight an eight-hour span on any given weekday.

So next time you hit the intersection after a St. Lawrence Market visit, pay extra attention.

As for the other intersections – some outside the downtown core – issues of high traffic volume, multiple lanes of approach in both directions, and complex turning maneuvers may contribute to the higher rates.

Here are the intersections – any surprises?

1. Lake Shore Blvd. E. at Lower Jarvis St.

2. Lake Shore Blvd. E. at Don Roadway

3. Ellesmere Rd. at Bellamy Rd.

4. Lawrence Ave. E. at Midland Ave.

5. St. Clair Ave. at Old Weston Rd.

6. Sheppard Ave. at Morningside Rd.

7. Weston Rd. at Lawrence Ave.

8. Ellesmere Rd. at Morningside Rd.

9. Islington Ave. at Albion Rd.

10. Lake Shore Blvd. W. at Spadina Ave.
