Well, it’s not a good morning for fans of The Simpsons.
Word is beginning to circulate that Harry Shearer – who plays Ned Flanders, Mr. Burns, Principal Skinner, Otto, and Smithers – has quit the show.
We’ll give you a moment to let that sink it; for the diehard fans, this is almost like losing a family member (or five). We mean, we grew up with all of those guys.
Shearer took to Twitter to let the world know that he would not be returning in the upcoming season, citing a desire to work on other projects. As much as this news sucks for pretty much anyone but him, we can’t blame the guy – the show has been on air for 26 years. Some cite that his departure was the result of a contact dispute.
Either way, the show will go on.
Seasons 27 and 28 of The Simpsons are due to enter production soon.
But without some of the most imitated, colourful, and most memorable characters, we can’t help but wonder if the show is finally on its way out.
Once it’s completed, the new series will take the total number of episodes to 625.
