The Seven Worst First Date Movies

We are never advocates of films on first dates – is there anything more awkward than staring at a screen in silence for two hours with a complete stranger? Alternative to the theatre, the “movie night in” usually means one thing and is typically only suggested after you have already hooked up for the first time…or are about to that night. Nonetheless, if you do find yourselves scanning Netflix with a potential love interest (LO) who you barely know, here are some films you may want to stay away from on those already awkward first movie nights in.

What’s Your Number?
Although we tend to go the comedic route when it comes to initial dates, as to avoid anything too heavy or mood altering, this film only serves to inspire the other to question what your number is.

Blue Valentine
Killing the idea of blissful romance (and likely the mood altogether), Blue Valentine depicts both the love story and demise of a marriage. Not to mention, watching any film that stars Ryan Gosling is not a great idea on an initial date. The girls will be wishing their dates looked more like him…and the guys probably will as well.

The Notebook/Titanic
The Notebook is not the best initial date movie because, along the same lines as Titanic, nothing in real life is really that romantic, passionate and strong. Even if you felt that instant chemistry with the person beside you, you may question its intensity after watching these romantic classics. Not to mention, both films are total tearjerkers; you just met one another…he or she does not need to see you cry just yet.

Knocked Up
If there is one film to kill the mood, it is this one; especially those for who babies and marriage seem a lifetime away. It may also lead to an awkward post-date conversation about whether either of you want children, turning into way heavier night than intended. At least it’s a reminder to use protection.

Fatal Attraction/American Psycho
We all think members of the opposite sex are crazy now and again, but these films take “crazy” to a whole new level and centre around dangerously off-balance characters that seem charming and “normal” at the beginning. Your date may turn paranoid and spend the post-flick walk or drink trying to detect red flags that you, too, may be crazy.

Closer
If there is a film that will make you re-evaluate whether you want to be in a relationship, it is Closer and its twisted tales of adultery. More so, it may inspire your date to question whether you have cheated in the past, whether you are the type to cheat, and if you’d cheat on them.

9 1/2 Weeks
Odds are, if you are on a first or second date (providing the date was not a follow-up to a one-night stand), the two of you may not have not even kissed. This film, based on the intense world of sexual obsession, is filled with scenes that are racy enough to redden the cheeks of even the most liberal YP. The film also depicts abuse and an emotional meltdown, taking what was supposed to be a lighthearted evening to a whole different level.
