The ‘Orange is the New Black’ Season 5 Premiere Date and Trailer Have Dropped

Here’s some good news on this cold, dead-of-winter day.

If you’re missing the ladies of Litchfield, they’ll soon return to grace your Netflix account with a fresh new season.

Announced today, Orange is the New Black will return for its fifth season on June 9.

Netflix released a 15-second teaser for the new season of the popular prison dramedy, offering the first look as to what’s in store after a dramatic end to the fourth season.

If you’re up-to-date in the happenings of the orange-clad mix of characters (and if you’re not, you may not want to read any further), you’ll know that the last season ended on a tragic note with the death of Poussey (Samira Wiley), who was killed by a guard during a protest. When officials attempt to cover up her death, a riot is planned.

The teaser picks up where this all ended.

“It’s war,” Danielle Brooks (“Taystee”) told The Hollywood Reporter when asked about the effect of Poussey’s tragic death on the upcoming season. “Taystee has nothing to lose, she’s lost everything that she cared so deeply about. It’s time to fight.”

Not only is it juicy, it’s also totally relevant at a time when the abuse of law officials continues to dominate both headlines and conversation.

In a departure from previous seasons, the upcoming 13-episode season will take place over the course of just three days.
