The Latest on Toronto’s Scene: August 15th, 2011

Continuing the insurgence of new restaurants in Toronto, we’ve found a few more exciting spots to come that you should take note of. We’re already salivating…

Cheese lovers unite: Toronto’s getting a new resto whose menu will centre exclusively around the good stuff. Cheesewerks, an artisanal grilled cheese spot, will be opening at 56 Bathurst Street in the coming month. Word to the wise, if you’re lactose intolerant, no amount of Lactaid pills will prep you for a feast here.

The Grove is a new food emporium set to open shop at 238 Queen Street West. The building – probably best known to most as having housed the Ben and Jerry’s beside Everest – will be reopened as a sustainable food market specializing in sustainable and healthy prepared foods. Think of it like a food court meets farmer’s market with a heaving serving of green mentality.

The Church and Carlton area of DT Toronto is undergoing a revamp right now, with the old Maple Leaf Gardens undergoing renos to house a grocery store, stand-alone Joe Fresh Style, and Ryerson facilities, and now we can count on Brown Bag Sandwiches to bring some much needed gourmet sandwich fare to the intersection. It was announced on Twitter that the aim is for an opening in early October.

And the space left in the wake of Bar One’s closing has been bought by Two Brothers Inc.‘s, well, brothers Lucas and Jacob Pearce. Expect an interesting take on the latest food movements to be showcased when the new spot, as-yet-unnamed, opens, potentially in late October.

Finally, DonDon Izakaya will be opening in the next couple months near Bay and Dundas. Taking the Izakaya movement to the next level, the new Toronto restaurant will offer chauffeur service for those nights when imbibing gets the best of you and will take reservations, meaning you won’t have to wait in line to ensure you get a seat. Until the space opens at 130 Dundas Street West, follow DonDon Izakaya on Twitter.
