The IRV: Cabbagetown’s Next Big Thing

Remember on Wednesday when spring showed up for the day? That was great. We assume it’s going to happen again at some point (after about seven more snowstorms) and when it does, you’ll see why The IRV (195 Carlton Street) is the next big thing.

First thing’s first. The IRV is not the I-R-V. It’s said as a word, not letters. Good, glad we got that cleared up. There’s nothing more awkward than calling a hot new gastropub by the wrong name.

The former home of Fare Game has been transformed into a modern and welcoming neighbourhood pub. You’ll find wall-mounted flat screens, a slick fireplace, and plenty of natural light. Separated into two rooms, the front space has bar top tables and bar stools and feels like the kind of place you’d head for a pint or two to watch the game. The back room offers more of a proper dining feel (i.e. the tables are lower), but in either case the atmosphere is decidedly laid back.

Executive Chef Dave de Faria has put together an ambitious menu that focuses on fresh and light international dishes. With more than 30 items of varying prices and styles, there’s no way you’ll run out of options anytime soon. It’s not just the scale of the menu that’s ambitious, but the price point as well. The Ontario roasted beet and kale salad we enjoy is only $11. The Chinese-inspired braised pork belly served on a sesame-scented quinoa, cabbage, and cucumber salad comes in at a cool $12. In fact, not a single burger or sandwich on the menu (including a slow roasted prime rib) comes in at more than $15. Of course, the price would be meaningless if the food wasn’t delicious – and that it is. Our Miami short ribs are bone-licking good, and the charcuterie board is a well-managed collection of cured meats and fine cheeses that combine with The IRV’s tasty house-made beer bread. Just as the space offers a more modern approach to the idea of a neighbourhood bar, the menu lifts itself out of any deep-fried associations you might have with the word pub.

Beyond the food, the giant wall of scotch, and the strong collection of local craft beer on tap, what really makes the IRV sure to be Cabbagetown’s next hot spot isn’t actually in the bar itself. It’s the two patios outside that combine to offer more than 70 seats. You know where you can go to get that kind of space to soak up the sunshine? Nowhere. So like we said, when spring finally decides to show up, The IRV will be offering the East End one of the best patio options it has had in years. There’s nothing more disappointing than not being able to grab a good bite and a fresh pint outside when the weather’s nice. Well, now you don’t have to worry.
