The City of Toronto Claims it Actually Wants to Listen to You

Let’s face it, we’re not used to our ideas being heard at City Hall.

It’s not their fault, really. Before now, there hasn’t been a simple and easy way to collect all the brilliant ideas Torontonians have.

Except that wait, the Internet has existed for a while.

Thankfully, the City of Toronto has finally decided to use it.

And IdeaSpace is that use. Here’s what they’re aiming to do, taken from the website’s about page:

This site is an online platform to provide opportunities for government and citizens to work together by connecting civic challenges to community problem-solvers. We believe the best way to tackle challenges that affect the community is with the community. By using a platform that allows members of the community to contribute from their own homes and on their own schedules, we believe that we will be able to engage a broader audience. And with this broader audience comes a broader range of ideas, solutions and participation.”

Will the powers that be actually be reading these ideas and suggestions and taking them up the ladder?

We can only wait and see.

There’s no question the city would benefit from a wider spread of voices being heard. The best ideas often come from the most unlikely places, so we’re holding out hope on this one.

Some topics currently being discussed on the site include the barriers to preparation in the planning process, ideas for improving public space on West Queen West, and how to make the planning process more meaningful.

Not the most exciting start, but there’s definitely potential for something useful to come out of this.

That perfect idea you’ve always had for Toronto is now just one click away from (possibly) the right people.

It’s time to let them know.
