The Abbey Adds Playful Elegance to Gastown Dining Scene

This recently opened tavern is located in the heart of Gastown (on the fringe of Chinatown) and owned by Andrey Durbach, Chris Stewart and Michel Durocher of nearby The Sardine Can.

They’ve taken over the previous home of Wild Rice and revamped it to reveal a swish new atmosphere you’ll definitely dig. Unique statement artwork draws your attention upon entry and raised booth-style seating invites guests to get cozy while taking in the bustling scene. Feeling more social? Nab a seat at their sleek and sexy long bar that runs the length of the restaurant – complete with handmade chairs constructed entirely from wood.

As a self-proclaimed progressive tavern, The Abbey’s menu offers their own take on classic and comfort food and drink with a modern sensibility. They’ve got a straightforward approach to cuisine and keep it simply presented based on regional and locally sourced ingredients where possible.

On the menu, you’ll find an eclectic mix of dishes guaranteed to get your taste buds dancing. House-made sausage rolls, Welsh rarebit, roast chicken, baked stuffed mussels and their signature cheese board make for great options. If you’re feeling up for it, order the butcher’s cut steak served with melted garlic butter mushrooms, crispy potatoes and watercress, and don’t forget to try the foie gras parfait with savoury seasonal fruit jam.

Cocktails and brew get creative thanks to the help of Ben de Champlain (previously of Boneta). The list features a tight offering of house-made specialty drinks (L’Abbaye, The Poor Clare) accompanied by a selection of wines. He’s ensured they’ve got plenty of draught beer on tap (Dageraad Brewing Blonde and Four Winds Pilsner ought to keep you cool).

The Abbey makes a perfect place to meet up for drinks and a bite before or after catching a game or movie at one of the neighbouring theatres – and is a great post-work option when heading out with friends or colleagues.

The Abbey is located at 117 West Pender Street. Find more information and reserve a table here.
