TEDxYYC: Inspiring New Ideas and Change

If terms like philanthropy, social change and dreaming big get you excited, then you need to attend the 2014 TEDxYYC event this Friday.

June 13th marks the fifth birthday of TED Talks in Calgary and the line up of speakers this year will address a variety of topics that will entertain and inspire everyone in attendance.

Who will be speaking this year?
Former CEOS, company presidents and politicians will be sharing their views of the world and what’s in store for the future of technology, the environment, social responsibility, business and design.

Lindsey Kindrat, an ambitious environmental advocate, will share her insight on green building, planning and design in the heart of oil country while Olympian and World Cup Silver Medalist Gilmore Junio will be recounting his experiences in Sochi, Russia and his extraordinary sacrifice for a teammate that won him international respect as a true champion.

A Must-See
Bart Houlahan will also be making an appearance on Friday. Once the president of a basketball sporting goods business valued at $250 million, Bart has turned his attention to his latest project called B Lab. As a co-founder of this venture, Bart has helped introduced an internationally credited model that seeks to solve social and environmental issues through business. Described in an article by the New York Times as “capitalism, but with a little heart,B Lab is involved in every different kind of commerce you could imagine. As an example, the B Lab team has created Thread LLC, an entrepreneurial bunch in Haiti who turns street-side trash into gainful employment by converting soda bottles in fabric.

Roshan is another exciting business that just launched in the last few years. Roshan is B Lab’s first certified project in Afghanistan, a telecommunications business helping to bring much-needed infrastructure to a country that had less than 100,000 cellular connections in the previous decade. More locally, BDC is the first financial institution in Canada to receive B-Corp certification in their effort to support individuals who create social purpose firms.

What Are You Waiting For?
We could go on for hours about all the interesting topics that will be covered – astronomy from a religious man’s perspective, sonic architecture and culture perspectives from a world-class hoop dancer – but you should really just purchase your ticket and see for yourself. We guarantee that you’ll feel smarter for having attended.
