Supinder Wraich: Today’s Notable Young Professional

Today’s Notable Young Professional is actress Supinder Wraich, whose career satisfies an insatiable appetite to do everything, a curiosity she’s always had but was never satisfied through other occupations…

Elevator Pitch: Describe your job in a nutshell.
I interpret lines from a script into a living, breathing person.

Why did you start working at your company? What was the inspiration for this career route?
I always had this insatiable appetite to do everything, never really pinpointing one specific occupation. Being an actor satisfies that curiosity for the most part. I get to play people from all walks of life.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The best part is when I’m researching a role. From witchcraft, to the space race, to murder, on a regular basis I’m looking into so many different realms of our world to mine information for whomever I’m creating. My Google history is a bit strange…

The challenging part is making sure that the character I’ve created is whole, that they’re not just a caricature, but someone who lives outside the scenes of the script and that audiences can identify with as a human being.

What is one sign that you’ve seen over the years to suggest that your work/life balance is off?
My agent calls me with auditions and I don’t dictate my schedule so my work/ life balance is usually thrown off on a weekly basis. So when I’m not shooting or auditioning, I try to take advantage of those times to make sure I see friends, spend time with my family, and fit in as much life as possible.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
The challenge and reward of being an actor and what happens next is usually a total mystery. So far I’ve worked in Canada, Europe, India, and the US. I hope in five years that list has grown to include a lot more places.

What is one major challenge that you’ve had to overcome in your career? How did you overcome it?
Confidence. Some days you have it, some days you don’t. I overcome it with process. On the jobs where I feel something is missing, or out of tune, I go back to my process and try to fill the gaps where I feel insecure with the work.

What does success look like to you? Does Money = Happiness?
For me, happiness = not having to worry. I think in any contract position, there’s always the added stress of where the next job is coming from. True success would equal not having that little voice asking what’s next all the time. But then again, I think that little voice is also what keeps most of us on top of our game.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
When I booked the feature film “Textuality” starring Jason Lewis and Eric McCormack. I had a huge crush on Jason from when he played Smith Jared on Sex and the City, so to have romantic scenes with him was a total dream!

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
I think whatever job you want to have, take the time to hone your craft. Lucky breaks come and go, but whatever work you get is usually dependent on your level of skill, so make sure you’re proficient at whatever it is you’ve chosen to do.

Where is your favourite place to wine/ dine in your city and why?
I love to entertain at my place. I get to choose the menu, there’s no last call, and friends can sleep over.

When you’re not working how do you love to spend your “Me” time?
Reading. I love fiction; I can’t get enough of it.

Where is your favourite place to travel? Why?
I was born in India and I love going back there. There’s a certain smell when you get off the plane that’s a mixture of probably gasoline and humidity (in the bigger cities) that I find intoxicating. It’s a totally different world. There’s a sense of surrender in all the chaos of India that, oddly, relaxes my mind. I crave it every few years.

If you had to choose a theme song, what would it be?
Right now I’m listening to Erykah Badu’s ‘On And On’, that one seems fitting.

If you weren’t doing what you’re doing, what would you be doing?
My little sister is heading to med school. I picture her saving lives in a few years and am in awe of the things she’ll know about the human anatomy. I have a body, but I feel like I know so little about it, let alone how to save myself or someone else if they were hurt. If I wasn’t an actor, I’d like to do something in that line of work.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
I give to Breakfast for Learning when I can. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it’s very hard to learn when you’re hungry.

What to you is notable?
Any action that affects someone else in a positive way.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
iPhone.

Supinder is currently starring in the International Emmy Award-winning conspiracy thriller ‘Guidestones’ available on CTV Extend; you can catch the series here.
