Style Icon Jane Birkin Asks Hermes to Remove Her Name From the Famous ‘Birkin Bag’

Legendary style icon, actress, and singer Jane Birkin, who has also given her name to the iconic Hermès Birkin bag for over 31 years, has now asked for her name back.

“Having been alerted to the cruel practices endured by crocodiles during their slaughter for the production of Hermès bags carrying my name … I have asked Hermès Group to rename the Birkin until better practices responding to international norms can be implemented for the production of this bag,” 68-year-old Birkin said.

Her statement comes after seeing a video released by PETA showcasing the inhumane slaughtering practices of the crocodile farms that apparently supplies skins for the Birkin Bag. Warning, this contains graphic footage that might not be suitable for sensitive viewers.

PETA said it takes two or three crocodiles to make one of the cherished handbags.

The Birkin bag remains one of the most luxurious items in the market hitting price points as high as $100,000 with waiting lists years long.
