Spring Trend: YP Women Suit Up

Workwear, red carpet wear or even everyday wear – women have been embracing a powerful presentation in suits this season.

The power suit was introduced in the 1920s when Chanel freed women from corsets, offering them jersey slacks and skirt suits. Today, power-dressing has evolved and many women do not feel the need to try to fit into the stiff form and exaggerated shoulders of the male-influenced silhouette. But we cannot deny that there’s something appealing about wearing a two-piece that gives us young professional women an air of confidence and an aura of authority.

While suits may not be so prevalent on the runways, celebrities, bloggers and fashionistas are suiting up on every occasion. Brands like Stella McCartney and Celine have made workwear a major part of their seasonal offerings and stores like Zara and H&M have stepped up their office-appropriate, on-trend suiting for under $200.

Though celebrity women ordinarily opt for gorgeous gowns on the red carpet, several women have been choosing to borrow from the boys instead, dressing in (Yves) Saint Laurent, the inventor of the women’s trouser suit. Emma Watson arrived at the Late Show With David Letterman last month wearing a Saint Laurent suit, Angelina Jolie wore a Saint Laurent tuxedo on the red carpet at the BAFTA Awards in February and Salma Hayek also showed off a suited look at the Saint Laurent show in Paris.

Nothing says workwear like pinstripes. Opting for a more androgynous look at the office like blogger Angelica Blick in wingtip oxfords and a pinstripe two-piece presents an equal sartorial footing with men. ?Saint Laurent also offered a slim streamlined pinstripe suit for their Spring 2014 ready to wear collection.

For a refined weekend look, pairing a laid back, linen short suit with a pair of Chucks looks complete, clean and casual. Add a baseball cap to a tailored suit to establish a more care-free semblance and select a printed suit to soften a more masculine silhouette.

During Toronto’s scorching spring and summer days, a blazer vest is a brilliant and cooler approach to the suit. Jason Wu and Victoria Beckham both sent sleeveless suits down the runway during their Spring 2014 shows.

Bright suits in yellow, cobalt, crimson and pink create a fresh and striking daytime look.

It is understood that fashion can endow confidence and poise both in a social or career setting and the power-suit is one versatile and commanding look for women that will never go out of style.
