WORK

Describe what you do in less than 140 characters. Go.
I am an Investment Professional at Third Eye Capital. We challenge ourselves to invest in situations that others typically shy away from.

What was the inspiration for your career route
I am an information and news junkie. Growing up I watched the BBC and BNN instead of Saved by the Bell. Watching market pundits on TV is what attracted me to investing and led me to pursue a career in finance. What makes me most passionate about investing is that you learn something new from each situation, making it a lifelong skill that compounds over time.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career so far?
I try to make each day a milestone by setting smaller goals that can be raised daily. This forces me to always grow and not peak.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years?
I can’t imagine working anywhere other than where I am today. I have the unique opportunity to be part of a team that is continuously coming up with creative ways to add value to our investors and to the companies we finance. I would love for our firm to expand into different investing strategies that complement our guiding principles, which have led us to be who we are today. Outside of work, I hope to have travelled more, have a family, and be a better cook.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Keep an open mind and have many mentors. Listening to the feedback and advice that I have received from my mentors has allowed me to see my blind spots. Don’t deflect criticism; if someone takes the time to criticize you, it’s likely because they care enough to let you know.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is it (or they) important to you?
While this is not a charity per se, I helped co-found a volunteer-based social impact fund that provides micro loans to immigrants in Canada who have the skills to start a business but struggle to obtain a loan due to their lack of credit history. Our mission is to encourage entrepreneurship in Canada, which I think is the ultimate job and growth driver for our economy.

What is one major challenge that youve had to overcome in your career? How did you overcome it?
The ability to be patient. I think this applies to both my career and life. We are always trying cross the finish line as fast as possible. Sometimes we need to step back to the basics and ensure we are consistent in putting up good results

What does the word notable mean to you?
To be notable means three things: 1. someone who has unwavering integrity, 2. someone who makes good use of his or her time, and 3. is compassionate.

PLAY

Where is your favourite place to wine/dine in your city and why?
There are too many to name, but at the moment I would say Branca. This Argentinian-inspired restaurant in the heart of Brockton Village has a tightly packed, rustic dining room. They have a fantastic wine list and use authentic South American grilling techniques to create mouth-watering dishes. It has a very homey atmosphere that keeps me coming back.

Whats the most visited website on your Internet browser? The most played song on your phone?
Without a doubt, Bloomberg. As for the music, Southern rap is my fuel (Rick Ross to be specific!), so if I am at the gym or closing a deal that’s what I’m listening to. On the weekends I prefer lounging to Federico Aubele or Buena Vista Social Club.

Whos one person you think everyone should be following on social media?
The Dalai Lama. His tweets give good perspective on an array of life events.

Whats your favourite country to visit and why? And whats the next one you plan on travelling to?
Brazil. The energy in Rio is unlike anything I have experienced. It’s definitely a place I can see myself returning to for its great food, scenic beaches, and tremendously warm people.  As for my next trip, I plan on going to Japan in the not too distant future.

What gives you the greatest FOMO?
Not spending enough time with my family and friends.

Whats your guiltiest pleasure?
Candy – Jujubes in particular. I’ll keep eating them until I feel sick.

Whats something you wish you didnt spend so much money on? Whats something you wish you spent more on?
That’s a tough question because I’m not exactly a big spender. I guess I would have to say eating out. I love trying new restaurants with my wife, so we often find ourselves eating out a few times per week. I wish I spent more money on treating my family to unique experiences. It doesn’t have to be something grand or expensive, but I think it’s important to show gratitude to your loved ones.

And finally, what does success look like to you? Work, play, or otherwise
Success to me is having the ability to make a material impact on the things that matter most to you.
