WORK

1. Describe what you do in less than 140 characters. Go.
I am Founder of AB Co. We power unforgettable music moments through progressive marketing + PR campaigns for clients we love.

2. What was the inspiration for your career route?
Music. I fell in love with live music and great songs when I was 12. I then fell in love with the music industry by the time I was 16. The idea of touring and getting to live in a space surrounded by incredibly talented people who loved music just as much as me was the best discovery. I knew I had found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and fought very hard to make living in that space full-time a reality.

Nowadays my biggest inspiration comes from the insanely talented artists I get to call my friends and colleagues. It also comes from my resilient team. I also am always inspired by my mentors that constantly encourage me to rise to the occasion every day and kick ass. Also, the new Desaparecidos album. It’s pretty damn inspirational.

3. What is the most memorable milestone in your career so far?
A big milestone was rebranding the company from “Audio Blood” to AB Co. this year. With that we announced our expansion into the US. This is something I dreamed of doing for a long time.

4. Where do you see yourself in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years?
I try to measure my years based on the impact I would like to have on the music and marketing industry.

The impact I would like to make in five years is to change the way music is marketed, to create some very memorable events and moments for music fans that impact their lives positively, to help make artists’ lives easier, and to continue partnering with amazing companies to do these things. In five years I would like this impact to be North America-wide. In 10 and 20 years I’d love to have an even more international impact.

5. Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Is it horrible to link to my own blog post? Probably. But I’m going to do it anyways, sorry! I wrote this article over the summer. It sums up the lessons I’ve learned the hard way!

6. Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is it (or they) important to you?
Yes! We are doing some work with Apathy is Boring around the federal election. Getting youth out to vote is very important to me because it’s our country too!

Covenant House is an amazing homeless shelter in Toronto. It’s important to me because I believe everyone should be loved and taken care of when they’ve been dealt a horrible hand.

7. What is one major challenge that you’ve had to overcome in your career? How did you overcome it?
A big challenge for me was learning how to manage a team and be a strong leader every day. At first I made a ton of mistakes. I really had to have a good shakedown with myself to figure out what type of boss I wanted to be.

I overcame it by looking to those I trusted for help. I surrounded myself with mentors and asked them a million questions.  I embraced feedback and implemented changes. I am still learning but I am very lucky to have a dedicated team, the kind I had only dreamed of.

8. What does the word notable mean to you?
Messing with convention tactfully!

PLAY

1. Where is your favourite place to wine/dine in your city and why?
Sneaky Dee’s.

2. What’s the most visited website on your Internet browser? The most played song on your phone?
Most visited website: 99U.

My most played song right now is “Twin Sized Mattress” by The Front Bottoms. Try not playing this track on repeat after the first time you hear it!

3. Who’s one person you think everyone should be following on social media?
Geoff Stairs – @gstairs on Instagram. If you like things that look nice.

4. What’s your favourite country to visit and why? And what’s the next one you plan on travelling to?
My favourite country to visit is Iceland. It’s magical.

I am travelling to NYC next week. I love America. NY with its sophistication, Austin with its tacos, San Fran with the techies, New Orleans with the jazz, Chicago with Wilco… it’s really just a big amusement park of awesome.

5. What gives you the greatest FOMO?
I tend to not get FOMO anymore. I have come to the very real understanding that I might die if I try to be everywhere. I learned this the hard way.

6. What’s your guiltiest pleasure?
Reese’s Pieces

7.  What’s something you wish you didn’t spend so much money on? What’s something you wish you spent more on?
Too much money: Uber.  Too little: vinyl records.

8. And finally, what does success look like to you? Work, play, or otherwise…
Success is getting to do what you love every day, with people you love, and building a community that makes a great impact. Also, success to me is totally f*cking with conventions carefully for the greater good.
