Ryan Gosling Calls Out Costco for ‘Abhorrent Cruelty’ and Demands They Sell Cage-Free Eggs

Ryan Gosling, one of the 20 most stylish men alive and everyone’s favourite Internet boyfriend, has a soft spot for animal welfare.

And he’s employing the Taylor Swift approach of persuasion.

Gosling penned a tenacious open letter to Costco CEO Craig Jelinek yesterday, urging him to sell cage-free eggs across more than 600 Costco locations worldwide. The appeal comes after a scathing undercover investigation conducted by The Humane Society exposed the abhorrent conditions in which chickens live at a major Costco egg supplier.

Costco is currently eight years behind in its commitment to sell eggs born of a humane practice.

For those easily rattled by videos of animal suffering, Gosling’s words should suffice: “Rows upon rows of birds confined in filth-laden cages with the mummified corpses of their cage-mates—eating, sleeping, defecating, and laying eggs on top of dead birds—and hens’ wings, legs, and necks trapped in the corroded wires of their battery cages.”

Gosling goes on to plea that chickens should be privy to the same cage-free lifestyle Costco recently afforded its roster of veal calves and pigs and also calls the company out for deceptive labelling that featured birds living it up on green pastures.
