Rachel Sin: Today’s Notable Young Professional

Today’s Notable Young Professional is fashion designer Rachel Sin, who will be showcasing her collection of functional and modern dresses for fashion-forward professional women on October 22nd at Toronto Fashion Week…

Elevator Pitch: Describe your business in a nutshell.
The Rachel Sin label is a well-edited collection of dresses suitable for day-to-night. These distinctive dresses are sculpted to the form of the female body, with architectural lines that are strong, yet feminine and always at ease with effortless function. We solve the what-to-wear crisis for any occasion while mastering accessible style that fits the ever-evolving needs of the modern woman.

Why did you start your business, what was the inspiration?
I started the business because I could not find contemporary work wear for the creative professional that was functional, modern and fashion-forward.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
I get to be creative on so many different levels and have direct control of the outcome.  Sometimes this responsibility is daunting, but it wouldn’t be fun if it wasn’t.

Where do you see your business going in 5 years?
We see the label saturating the North American market with growth in the US.

What does success look like to you?
Monetizing a brand that is who you are and what turns you on.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
Every milestone gets bigger and better; I’m sure presenting on the Main Runway at Toronto Fashion Week this October 22nd will be one of them.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Work hard and be persistent because success takes time and you truly have to be passionate about what you do.

What is Notable to you?
Take pride in what you do – being just good enough sucks.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
BlackBerry, because I need a keyboard.  I like being precise when I type and think emails with spelling mistakes are unprofessional.

How do you keep active, energetic, and vibrant?
As you get older, you grow to like routine. I eat healthy, juice, go to the gym, dance salsa and surround myself with good people. These things keep me sane, balanced and happier in general.
