Rachel Bendayan: Today’s Notable Young Professional

Today’s Notable Young Professional is Rachel Bendayan, who possesses so many professional titles it really makes you wonder how she gets any sleep at night. And that’s on top of being Outremont, Montreal’s Liberal Party of Canada candidate. We caught up with her to find out what inspired her career path in law and politics, and what advice she would share with other young professionals…

WORK

1. Describe what you do in less than 140 characters. Go.
I’m a lawyer, a mediator, a teacher, an artist, a community volunteer and I’m the candidate for the Liberal Party of Canada in Outremont, Montreal.

2. What was the inspiration for your career route?
I’ve always been passionate about social justice, which is what drove my career in international law. I think its time for change; we’ve had enough of “politics as usual” and I believe I can make a difference. We need to be the change we want to see, or so Gandhi says… so that’s what I’m doing.

3. What is the most memorable milestone in your career so far?
Attending the UN Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa.

4. Where do you see yourself in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years?
Fighting for people’s rights, making a difference where it counts, empowering the next generation of young leaders.

5. Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Don’t be afraid, go for it! Do what you love, try what you fear.

6. Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is it (or they) important to you?
I support quite a bunch of charities in the city, including a few local charities in my riding: I am running a food drive for Sun Youth during my campaign, I organized a clothing drive this summer for the Mile End Mission, and I’ve been delivering meals on wheels for Multi-Caf. There is a growing need in Montreal, and I think we need to lead by example.

7. What does the word notable mean to you?
Of note. A person of interest. Someone you’d want to meet.

PLAY

1. Where is your favourite place to wine/dine in your city and why?
Laurea on Laurier – lovely ambiance, great people and, obviously, amazing food!

2. What’s the most visited website on your Internet browser?
Twitter and Facebook (yeah, I’ll admit it, Facebook).

3. Who’s one person you think everyone should be following on social media?
Mayors @DenisCoderre and @Nenshi, both are awesome on Twitter.

4. What’s your favourite cocktail?
Moscow Mule.

5. What gives you the greatest FOMO?
I don’t really do FOMO; there’s no time to worry about what you’re missing if you are busy doing what you want to do and enjoying where you are.

6. What would be your last meal? And don’t hold back…
If my last meal were right now, it’d be a huge stack of Nutella crêpes! Random, but it’s what I’ve been craving during the campaign.

7. What’s your guiltiest pleasure?
Netflix!
