Photos: Calgary Unveils the World’s Largest and Most Amazing YMCA

Remember the Y? Well, it’s back in a big way.

Yesterday saw the world’s biggest YMCA open its doors in Calgary after. Located in Rocky Ridge, the Shane Homes YMCA spans an incredible 284,000 square feet and came with a  $192 million price tag. Construction began in 2014.

An architectural gem, it’s as impressive inside as it is on its wavy, modern exterior. It boasts a collection of facilities, amenities, and services that would make the Kardashians jealous:

  • – 250-seat theatre
    – Art-making spaces
    – Calgary’s first express “self-service” library, which includes a collection of 4,000 children’s and 2,500 adult books
    – Pools (one with wave system, one with a water slide, and one with eight lanes)
    – Hot tub and steam room
    – Ice rinks
    – Gymnasiums (three in total)
    – Running track
    – Climbing wall
  • – Physiotherapy and medical clinic

It’s possible that the record-breaking facility could also hold the title of having registered the most members since its soft open a few weeks ago. Almost 10,000 new members have signed up to bask in the glory of Calgary’s glitzy new Y.

“It’s one of four new rec centres that we’ve built since 2010 in the City of Calgary. The Y has sold two to three times more memberships than expected,” said Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “I hope that it will serve as a place for community building for generations to come.”
