People Around the World Are Working More Hours Than Ever Before

‘Working the 9 to 5’ may soon become a luxury, rather than a complaint.

According to research from tax and consulting firm EY, the 40-hour workweek is quickly becoming an ideal of the past. Part of the research included a global survey that concluded nearly half (46%) of managers around the world reported logging more than 40 hours a week, and 40% who said their hours have increased over the past five years.

Mexico is especially struggling to find a balance between work and life, followed closely by our neighbours to the South. China, meanwhile, has managed to figure out a decent equilibrium between time at he office vs. time at home.

Other notable findings from the survey:

– Parents have seen their work hours increase vs. those without children.
– Around one in 10 Americans have suffered consequences (like being denied a promotion) as a result of trying to implement more flexible schedules.
– More than two-thirds of those surveyed admitted they’d consider quitting if their bosses weren’t open to more flexible hours.
– “Finding time for me” is the most prevalent challenge faced by millennial parents who are managers in the US (76%) followed by “getting enough sleep” and “managing personal and professional life” (67%).

Now stop reading and get to work.
