Out for Lunch: downtownfood

While the term “power lunch” may remind you of an era when suit jackets automatically came with shoulder pads, we stopped in for a mid-day meal at downtownfood to see how it rates for your next business lunch.

The Venue: downtown food, located at 628 8th Avenue SW, calls itself a modern bistro.

The Eats: The menu offerings are a refreshing break from your run-of-the-mill lunch spots. From fish tacos to a DIY Banh Mi sandwich board, the popular restaurant has an Asian flare. There was a three-course set menu available for $25, with your choice of soup or salad, shrimp tacos or a sandwich, and made-to-order apple fritters (read: fancy donut hole) for dessert. The tacos were delish, but we thought the fries that came with the sandwich were overly garlicky for a work lunch.

The Scene: Most tables have sufficient space around them; however, there is a bank of tables spaced elbow distance apart from one another, making it awkward to discuss lunchtime topics you don’t want your neighbouring table to overhear. The space is indeed modern, calm and quiet in general.

Can you arrive, dine and depart within a lunch hour? Yes. We arrived at 12:08pm and were out by 1:10pm. If you got there just before the noon rush, it seems as though you could definitely make it in and out in under an hour.

Parting Words: If you’re on the Westside of downtown and are in the mood for a lunch in what feels like an oasis, check out downtown food.
