Ontario’s Minimum Wage Rises to $11.40 on Saturday – Is it Enough, Though?

There’s some good news for your local barista.

As of Saturday, the minimum wage in Ontario will rise to $11.40 per hour.

The increase raises the minimum wage from $11.25 and is the third consecutive annual increase.

The minimum wage for liquor servers rises from $9.80 per hour to $9.90 (many of them rely on tips, of course).

Last October 1, as you may recall, these five provinces raised their minimum wages.

The New Democrats don’t think the increase is enough and have been calling on the provincial Liberal government to raise the general minimum wage to $15 an hour (which is more than some entry-level positions at startups).

Labour Minister Kevin Flynn reminds us that Ontario’s minimum wage is one of the highest in the country and said that the government will re-examine it in about two years.

Meanwhile, Alberta’s NDP government recently announced that the province’s minimum wage would rise to $15 an hour by 2018. Coupled with the low real estate cost, this doesn’t sound like a bad gig for Calgary’s least-skilled workers.

For comparison, we’ll leave you with the average hourly wages of popular professions in Canada.
