Ontario Will Increase its Minimum Wage This Fall

Not many people need reminding that 2015 was a bad year financially.

And while 2016 hasn’t kicked off any better, a few of us can at least expect a little extra money in our pocket come fall.

The Ontario Government has announced that the province’s minimum wage will increase from $11.25 an hour to $11.40 an hour starting October 1st.

For those working in the service industry, minimum wage will increase by 10 cents to $9.90 an hour.

Ontario residents that work from home for an employer will also see an increase on their pay cheque, with their hourly wage increasing from $12.40 to $12.55.

Finally, students under the age of 18 that work less than 28 hours a week will see an increase from $10.55 to $10.70.

The Ontario Government announces any changes to minimum wage before April 1st each year, which allows businesses time to adjust before the changes will take effect six months later.

While it’s not a major increase, it does offer some needed financial flexibility for bottom earners – perhaps enough to look into going on a vacation somewhere hot, or buying a pair of self-tying shoes, or maybe even one of these retro bad boys.
