On Trend: From Rock’n’Roll to Runway

Rock’n’Roll and fashion have always gone together like peanut butter and jelly (I never ate those two together but seems like the right sentiment here), therefore making it only fitting that this fall season has a strong combination of musical influence on fashion from heavy rock’n’roll all the way through to punk rock.

As a rock’n’roll devotee (Led Zeppelin for life), I obviously could’t be more excited to see fashion and rock’n’roll collide on the runway with a more predominate voice this season. Slim-fitting denim, luscious leather jackets, heavy black eyeliner, long unruly hair… and that’s just the boys. What could be better?

Whether you choose to draw inspiration from Mick Jagger or David Bowie, the collections this fall have given us more than a little fuel to light our inner rockstar and turn the volume up. Way up.

New wave glitter and gel or rock-heavy heroin chic guitar riffs may not be your style, but you can certainly modernize these looks and make them street worthy for today. Without taking you on a psychedelia acid trip circa 1969, or a ride through the 1980s punk scene, I have stuck with a basic black colour pallet and accented each look with just a hint of rock’n’roll for your next Saturday night out on the town.

Style Tip:
As someone who loves the thrill of the hunt,  thrift stores always have a vintage diamond in the rough. When attempting a rock’n’roll look, an authentic vintage (30-plus years old) piece is how to really get your game on. Scour your favourite local vintage and thrift shops to accentuate your designer duds. Mix high and low to create the true essence of great style.

And if you’re in New York City, stop by Trash and Vaudeville on St. Mark’s in the East Village. This shop has been in the Rock’n’Roll wear business since 1975  and you will not be disappointed… especially all you punk lovers.
